Being a motorist requires having a presence of mind on the road in watching out for other road users such as pedestrians and cyclists. However, there’s something that many drivers neglect in the process, according to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority or MMDA.
Motorists in 2021 were apprehended mostly due to ignoring traffic signs
On its Facebook page, the agency revealed the top 10 traffic violations that motorists have committed from January to November 2021, based on records of its Traffic Ticket Management Division. At the top of the list of infractions is Disregarding Traffic Sign, which makes up the bulk of drivers apprehended on the road and carries a penalty of Php 150.
This is followed by Unattended Illegally Parked Vehicle at number 2, where vehicles are left in no-parking zones by their respective owners, costing a Php 2,000 fine. Coming in at number 3 is the Violation of Dress Code for Riders, where motorcyclists and pillion riders are cited for failure to wear a proper crash helmet and closed shoes. The violation entails a penalty of Php 500 for the first offense, Php 700 for the second offense, and Php 1,000 for the third offense.
Not wearing proper crash helmet and riding shoes will earn the attention of traffic enforcers
Fourth on the list is having a Stalled Vehicle, which can affect the smooth flow of vehicular traffic especially if the disabled vehicle is in the middle of a busy thoroughfare. This carries a penalty of Php 200. At number five is having No or Defective Headlights, which involves a Php 150 fine. This violation endangers both the motorist concerned and other road users, especially when driving at night and in low-visibility conditions.
The rest of the most common violations recorded for the year are as follows:
- Reckless driving (Php 500)
- Obstruction (Php 1,000)
- Attended Illegally Parked Vehicle (Php 1,000)
- Violation of the Truck Ban (Php 2,000)
- Illegal turning (Php 150)
With more vehicles taking to the streets again, the MMDA is reiterating its appeal to motorists to comply with traffic rules being enforced, both for the convenience and safety of everyone on the road.
