Following the inauguration of the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge last year, it is now built with a new linear park and pedestrian stairs.
The Binondo-Intramuros bridge has been improved
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) held the ceremony days before the 2023 Chinese New Year. It was attended by key officials from DPWH, as well as People’s Republic of China Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian.
With the new linear park, the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge now has green and open spaces that can serve as a place for leisure, meetings, and recreational activities. It is also completed with benches and pavers, which can allow visitors to have a more comfortable and cozier stay at the park.
The bridge now has a park and pedestrian stairs
Meanwhile, the pedestrian stairs will improve accessibility going to and from the bridge. It is built on three locations – two on the Intramuros side and the other on the Binondo side. This provides a platform for alternative mobility options such as walking. As a result, the improved bridge promotes healthier means of transport and reduces the need for carbon-emitting cars.
Linking Solana Street in Intramuros and San Fernando Street in Binondo, the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge spans 70 meters long and 21.65 meters wide. It is constructed with four lanes, which is said to handle up to 30,000 motorists daily.
A new attraction in the city of Manila
Also, the bridge comes with a design aimed to become an iconic addition to the Metro Manila Skyline. With the new linear park and pedestrian stairs, the project should appeal to more Filipinos. Other features include illumination, thermoplastic road lines, and various road signage.
The Binondo-Intramuros Bridge is part of the Php 3.6-billion infrastructure grant by China under the Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation in 2017. It is the first UPMO-implemented (Unified Project Management Office) infrastructure project in partnership with the government of the Republic of China along with the Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge in Makati.
