The completion of the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge will be pushed back to a later date once again, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

The structure was initially to be completed by the end of this year but the DPWH set a new target completion date last October, which was supposed to be on the first quarter (Q1) of 2022. However, the agency announced that the opening of the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge will be delayed, and will not be completed in time for Q1 2022.

The DPWH had to push back the project timeframe to “relocate public and private services and utilities in the area.” The agency also cited that it is currently waiting on the arrival of the pre-fabricated steel materials from China. Aside from the two reasons, the completion of the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge is delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As such, the agency is targetting to finish the project by the first half of 2022.

“We are expecting a lot of dramatic changes for this project, with all the needed materials and high-performance launching equipment available on the construction site,” said DPWH Undersecretary Emil Sadain.

Undersecretary Sadain who is in charge of DPWH Unified Project Management Office (UPMO) Operations, did report that the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge is now 88.6 percent complete. Sadain added that the steel box girder components are already lifted on piers.

It will be used for the up-ramp at the Intramuros side, and to the viaduct structure over Estero de Binondo as well as to the corresponding ramp at the Binondo side. The DPWH also said that manpower and equipment resources are doing the lifting of pre-fab girders for the 298 meters up-ramp at Muelle dela Industria side.

The Php 3.39 billion Binondo-Intramuros Bridge is financed by China. It involves the construction of a 680 linear meter bridge that links the historic district of Intramuros at Solana Street and Riverside Drive with the bustling district of Binondo at Rentas Street/Plaza del Conde Street and Muelle dela Industria.

Of note, the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge is one of the two China Aid Bridges Project. The other structure funded by China is the Estrella-Pantaleon bridge connecting the cities of Makati and Mandaluyong.

Upon completion, the DPWH said that the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge will accommodate at least 30,000 vehicles daily.
