The tech updates on this sedan have paid off.

The next-generation Toyota Vios, which is yet to be released in the Philippine market, has received a five-star safety rating from the ASEAN New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). In fact, it has garnered five-star ratings for all of the agency’s categories including adult occupant protection (AOP), child occupant protection (COP), safety assist, and motorcyclist safety (MS).

ASEAN NCAP - Toyota Vios (2023)

Of note, the Toyota Vios (or Yaris in other markets), was involved in the rigged safety tests which was previously admitted to by Daihatsu. This fiasco has since been investigated and reviewed by a third party, but, the new results from ASEAN NCAP show that the Vios meets modern safety standards without the need for a rigged test in the first place.

To sum the crash results up, the Vios received a weighted score of 35.25 out of 40 for the AOP test. It then managed a weighted score of 16.64 out of 20 for COP, 16.08 out of 20 for safety assist, and 10.73 out of 20 for motorcycle safety. In total, the Toyota-branded sedan received a total weighted score of 78.70 out of 100, which is equivalent to a five-star overall safety rating.

For those unfamiliar with car safety assessments the AOP and COP mainly involve crash testing to evaluate whether the car is able to protect an adult and child via its crumple zones and airbags. COP also involves the fitment of child seats.

The safety assist in turn takes stock of the vehicle’s driver-assistive features. On the Vios that was tested, this includes automatic emergency braking in the city and for pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind spot detection, lane keep assist, forward collision warning, and automatic high beams.

The MS category, in turn, evaluates how a particular model is able to prevent injury during a crash. This is mainly for motorcycle riders, but it also takes into consideration other vulnerable road users like pedestrians as well.

As mentioned above, this is the all-new version of the Toyota Vios. It was first launched as the Yaris Ativ in Thailand and it received vast improvements in its exterior styling and its on-board tech, particularly for connectivity and safety technologies.

The tested variant, in particular, is a Malaysian-spec Vios G. It uses a 1.5-liter engine that’s able to generate up to 105 horsepower and 138 Nm of torque.

For now, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) is yet to confirm when this new version of the popular sedan will be released for the local market. We’re of the opinion though that it is only a matter of time since it is TMP’s best-seller with a whopping 34,465 Vios units sold in 2022 alone.
