All-new Honda HR-V, BR-V get 5-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating

Two Honda models scored big when it comes to vehicle safety.

Two of Honda’s latest models have performed well when it comes to overall vehicle safety. The all-new Honda HR-V, and the next-gen BR-V have scored a five-star safety rating from the New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asia (ASEAN NCAP).

The all-new Honda HR-V achieved a total weighted score of 81.38 points in the ASEAN NCAP’s vehicle assessment. Honda’s five-seater crossover scored 28 out of 32 in Adult Occupancy Protection (AOP), which translates to a weighted score of 35 points. When it comes to Child Occupant Protection (COP), the Honda HR-V scored 45.43 out of 51, yielding a weighted score of 17.81 points. 

In the Safety Assist (SA) category, the HR-V posted 19.50 out of 21, getting a weighted score of 18.57. Meanwhile, it scored 8 out of 16 in the Motorcyclist Safety (MS) category, which translates to a weighted score of 10 points.     

By achieving a weighted score of 81.38 points, the all-new Honda HR-V is eligible to be given a five-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating.

It is worth noting that the Honda HR-V tested by the ASEAN NCAP is equipped with six airbags. To put things in perspective, the Honda HR-V variants launched in the Philippines last April 2022 are equipped with four airbags. However, the recently launched Honda HR-V RS Turbo at the 2022 Philippine International Motor Show (PIMS) comes with six airbags.

Aside from the HR-V, the next-generation Honda BR-V also managed to get a five-star safety rating from the ASEAN NCAP.

The seven-seater Honda BR-V accumulated a total weighted score of 77.02 points. It scored 26.98 out of 32 in AOP, which translates to a weighted score of 33.72. The BR-V then achieved 44.53 out of 51 in COP, yielding a weighted score of 17.46. 

In terms of the SA category, the next-gen Honda BR-V got 16.50 out of 21, posting a weighted score of 15.71. For the MS category, the BR-V scored 8.10 out of 16, translating to a weighted score of 10.13. 

The next-gen seven-seater Honda BR-V achieved a weighted score of 77.02 points, making it eligible to be given a five-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating. Of note, the Honda BR-V tested by the ASEAN NCAP comes with six airbags.

The next-gen BR-V has yet to make its Philippine debut. Although, Honda Cars Philippines Inc. (HCPI) has already previewed the all-new BR-V at the recently concluded PIMS. HCPI has yet to share further details as to when will be the actual local launch of the BR-V.

Honda HR-V

The 2023 Honda HR-V is a subcompact crossover. In the Philippine market, it has two variants. The top-spec RS Turbo CVT is priced at Php 1,739,000. The mid-spec trim meanwhile, is the HR-V V Turbo CVT and it is priced at Php 1,649,000. The entry-level HR-V S CVT meanwhile is priced at Php 1,389,000.

For engines, the HR-V V Turbo and the RS Turbo uses a 1.5-liter engine capable of making 174 horsepower and 240 Nm of torque. The HR-V S also uses a 1.5-liter mill, but it is naturally aspirated. In turn, its output is rated at 119 horsepower and 145 Nm of torque. All three trims use a continuously variable transmission sending power to its front wheels. 

Size-wise, the HR-V V and RS are 4,385mm long, while the HR-V S is 4,330mm long. All three come with a width of 1,790mm, and a height of 1,590mm. Both also have a wheelbase length of 2,610mm. The top-spec V gets a ground clearance of 181mm, whereas the HR-V S has more at 196mm. 

Locally, the HR-V competes against the likes of the Mazda CX-3, Hyundai Kona, Subaru XV, Toyota Corolla Cross, Ford Territory, among others.
