Mazda’s KODO: Soul of Motion design language needs no introduction. Yes, the Mazda 3 exterior is sleek and charming at any angle. The long hood, short trunk design, 18-inch wheels are all mesmerizing. Particularly, the front and rear light configurations are very impressive, like eyes of a beast. Domintaing the inside is a black theme with dark brown leather highlights on door panels and center console that remind us of the classy cockpit of the Mazda 6 Wagon 2018. For the most part, the Mazda 3 interior, with genuine perforated leather seats, sunroof and many other amenities are plush and upmarket.

All knobs, buttons and even plastics are soft to touch. Also worth noting in the 3 sedan is a standard intuitive tablet-like touchscreen head unit with a beautifully-designed interface. It can easily be connected to your smartphone via Bluetooth or USB. Better still, the system can house car settings for convenient features including auto-door locks, speed limit warning and rain-sensing wipers.

When it comes to space, the Mazda 3 boosts more than you expect in a city sedan. The wiggle room is abundant for 5 passengers; meanwhile, the trunk allows you to haul 5 huge duffle bags and even more with rear back rests folded down.

4. Mazda 3 2018 Philippines Review: Engine & Performance
Under the range-topping 3’s hood is a 2.0-liter SkyActiv-G gasoline engine capable of mustering 153 hp and 200 Nm of torque. As mentioned, even though this is not a turbo like the Civic, it provides enough torque and power at low and mid speeds (meaning great acceleration), let alone its fuel efficiency. At higher speeds, the power delivery remained consistent, giving you confidence in overtaking. Working in tandem with the engine is a 6-speed automatic gearbox with paddles shifters that allows smooth and on-point gear-shifting.

Driving around city in the Mazda 3 is a bed of roses thanks to light steering. At higher speed, it comes a bit heavier and stable when on the highway. Plus, the brakes system also feels protective. The suspension is also good at taking in road imperfections albeit a bit jittery with bigger potholes.
One trait we cannot miss when discussing a Mazda’s performance is the G-Vectoring Control (GVC) which helps reduce body roll when taking corners, making your ride more enjoyable.

A Sport mode is likewise on tap. Once you shift to this mode, the 3 tells you a totally different story. That time, the mill tends to stay at higher rpms. This maximizes the pulling power at every gear. That said, it’ll guzzle more gas. By the way, in terms of fuel consumption, it sips fuel at around 17.5 km/l at a highway speed of 90 kmph (13.1 km/l at Sport mode). In the meantime, expect an average consumption of 10.9 km/l in light traffic in the city at 60 kmph. As for heavy traffic, it does a fuel consumption reading of 6.5 km/l.

Last but not least, the Mazda 3 2018 engine is pretty noisy when in high rpms, even when your playlist is being played. This can affect your passengers’ comfort, yet if you are the type of driver who loves the roaring sound of a naturally-aspirated power plant, we dare say you’ll prefer it to your music.
