Now in 2023 however, it looks like the local car scene has caught up a bit. Heck, we even have two electric vehicle (EV) crossovers from two different Korean car brands available locally. We’re talking about the Kia EV6 and the Hyundai Ioniq 5.
If you’ve kept up with the car news, you’ll know that both of these are actually platform siblings. Specifically, they both use the Electric Global Modular Platform. Kia after all is a subsidiary of the Hyundai Motor Company. But which of these two is better on paper?
To find out, we’ll be comparing the Kia EV6 GT-Line Long Range against the Hyundai Ioniq 5 Long Range. This is because their prices are somewhat close to each other.
Kia EV6 vs Hyundai Ioniq 5: Exterior
Let’s start this comparison with the EV6 and the Ioniq 5’s dimensions. This is crucial to note, since size may provide clues on how spacious their interiors are. From those figures, one can also determine if it can even fit in one’s garage or not.
The Kia EV6
The EV6 GT-Line Long Range comes with a length of 4,695mm, a width of 1,890mm, and a height of 1,550mm. It also has a wheelbase length of 2,900mm.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5
The Ioniq 5 Long Range, in turn, has a length of 4,635mm, a width of 1,890mm, and a height of 1,605mm. Its wheelbase then spans 3,000mm.

Based on those figures, the EV6 is longer and taller compared to the Ioniq 5. The Hyundai model then gets a longer wheelbase length.

With regards to exterior features, both EVs come with LED automatic headlamps, LED daytime running lamps, LED taillights, rain-sensing wipers, and power-folding side mirrors. Passenger enjoyment is then enhanced on both the EV6 and Ioniq 5 thanks to their sunroofs.

Completing the sleek styling of the Kia EV6 and Ioniq 5 is a set of 20-inch alloy wheels. The appearance of both vehicles is further elevated thanks to the presence of a rear spoiler and flush door handles.

Both the EV6 GT-Line Long Range and the Ioniq 5 Long Range offer plenty of space for up to five occupants. Found on these two are minimalist-style cockpits and a lot of soft-touch surfaces. All of their seats are likewise clad in leather. Cabin cooling for both cars is then provided by a dual-zone automatic climate control system.

For the front cabin, these two models come with ventilated power-adjustable front seats. Both also come with a push-to-start button, an electrochromic rear-view mirror, ambient lighting, and a soft leather-wrapped elbow rest. The rear cabin for the EV6 and Ioniq 5 is then provided with 60:40 split folding seats. This makes loading their trunks with more cargo easier. Using the trunk on both EV models is likewise a breeze as both are equipped with power tailgates.
For onboard entertainment, both the EV6 and the Ioniq 5 are kitted out with a 12.3-inch touchscreen headunit. On both cars, these screens come standard with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth.

On the Kia model, however, its central headunit is linked to a 14-piece Meridian Surround Sound system. The Hyundai model’s headunit in turn, uses an eight-piece Bost sound system. It can then be argued that the EV6 might offer a better sound due to having more speakers.

Charging one’s smartphones aboard the Kia EV6 and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is made easier thanks to their wireless smartphone charging pads. Both cars have several USB chargers as well.
For the benefit of their drivers, both cars then get a 12.3-inch digital instrument display. On the EV6 and the Ioniq 5, their instrument screens are seamlessly linked together with their central touchscreens to form a large panoramic display.

For propulsion, both the EV6 and the Ioniq 5 use a Permanent Magnet Synchronous motor. The two platform siblings are both rear-wheel-drive.
On the EV6 GT-Line Long Range, the said motor can produce up to 226 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque. It is then powered by a 77.4 kWh lithium-ion battery. This provides the Kia EV6 with a total estimated range of 528 kilometers from a single charge.
The EV6 has more range than the Ioniq 5
The motor on the Ioniq 5 in turn, can churn out 214 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque. Powering the said motor on the Hyundai model is a 72.6 kWh lithium-ion battery. The said battery then provides the Ioniq 5 with a claimed range of 451 kilometers on a single charge.
For transmissions, the Kia model uses a 1-speed electronic transmission with Shiftronic. The Hyundai model, meanwhile, gets a single-speed reduction gear transmission.
As one can see from the figures above, the Kia EV6 offers slightly more in terms of performance. The Kia gets 12 more horsepower to be exact.
The Ioniq 5's 451 km range is more than enough for daily driving and road trips
The difference in EV ranges, however, is much more substantial. For a clearer perspective on this, the Kia gets 77 km more than the Hyundai. That’s roughly equivalent to a one-way trip from Quezon City to Santo Tomas, Batangas.

Kia EV6 vs Hyundai Ioniq 5: Safety
In terms of safety, these two EV models from Kia and Hyundai both come with what you’d expect from a modern vehicle. Both come standard with anti-lock braking, stability control, hill-start assist, tire pressure monitoring, and ISOFIX child seat anchors. Both likewise come with dual front airbags, side airbags, and curtain airbags.
To support those standard safety bits, both vehicles also get a wide range of driver-assistive safety features. For the Kia-made EV, it comes packaged with a five-year or 160,000 km vehicle warranty, an eight-year or 160,000 km battery system warranty, a five-year free preventive maintenance package, and five years of free access to Kia’s 24/7 roadside assistance service. A portable charger is likewise included for every purchase of the Kia EV6.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 in turn, gets a five-year or 200,000 km (whichever comes first) warranty, an eight-year or 160,000 km battery warranty, and a five-year or 75,000 km free maintenance package.

The biggest difference, and the one thing that reflects the price gap between the EV6 and the Ioniq 5, is their performance and range.
The EV6 from the rear
As established above, the Kia EV6 provides a slightly more powerful motor and battery pack than the Hyundai Ioniq 5. That said, the 12-horsepower difference might be negligible for most folks, but the range difference of 77 km in favor of the Kia model, however, is enormous.
If range anxiety is a thing for you as a buyer, then the more expensive Kia might be more suitable for you. But then again, do remember that the Hyundai EV’s 451 km range is nothing to scoff at. That’s more than enough for daily driving, and even the occasional road trip after all.
In terms of amenities though, the EV6 and Ioniq 5 are just about on par with each other. Both are also quite similar when it comes to onboard safety features.
