This track-ready EV can go from zero to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 arrived in the Philippine market last year as a calm and composed electric vehicle (EV). But over on the global scene, the Korean automaker has decided to unlock the model’s performance potential with the introduction of the Ioniq 5 N.

With the N badge, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 becomes a track weapon with more aggressive styling. It has been integrated with performance-oriented features as part of N’s first step towards electrification. Hyundai’s performance division promises to roll out more N-badged EVs.

“Hyundai N spearheads the technological leadership of Hyundai Motor Company,” said Hyundai Motor Company President and CEO Jaehoon Chang. “N brand’s winning combination of technological know-how and motorsport experience is pushing the limits of vehicle performance, which has most recently resulted in Ioniq 5 N, a gamechanger for electric high performance.”

Exterior

Exterior-wise, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N comes with dimension changes to accommodate the sporty enhancements. The EV is 20 mm lower, 50 mm wider for the wider tires, and 80 mm longer for a more prominent diffuser. It runs on 21-inch forged aluminum wheels in 275/35R21 Pirelli P-Zero tires.

One of the most noticeable design cues is the Luminous Orange accents around the lower section of the vehicle, giving a sportier finish. Air flaps and air curtains are installed at the front for extra cooling, while the rear end gets an N-specific wing-type spoiler that has a triangular N-only HSML brake light.

Interior

The sporty aesthetics continue inside emphasized by the new steering wheel. It features the N logo for the first time with N buttons that set the desired drive mode. N bucket seats are also installed, which are said to come with reinforced bolstering. With it, the seats can support the passengers even during sharp cornering at high speeds.

Like the non-N Ioniq 5, the performance version is also fitted with sustainable materials including recyclable paperette door decorative garnish, BIO PET yarn from sugarcane, and recycled PET yarn from recycled PET bottles, among others. Despite the track-focused enhancements, the Ioniq 5 N is equipped with USB Type C, a wireless charger, and cup holders for everyday use.

Tech & Safety

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is developed with the N e-shift and N Active Sound +. While the N e-shift provides a driving feel similar to ICE (internal combustion engine) cars by simulating the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) in N models, the N Active Sound + delivers ICE-like engine sounds. The latter uses a 10-speaker system – eight internal and two external.

Not only does the sound provide a more thrilling driving experience but also makes it safer for pedestrians as it can help them hear the EV. Hyundai N engineers also designed the N Brake Regen that offers a maximum of an industry-leading 0.6 G decelerative force while under ABS activation.

Powertrain

Powering the EV is a dual-motor AWD (all-wheel-drive) system capable of generating a combined output of 641 horsepower, which is twice more than the most potent non-N Ioniq 5. The range has yet to be revealed but Hyundai claims the Ioniq 5 N can go from zero to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds.

A wide range of N-exclusive driving features are available including the N Race and N Drift Optimizer. The N Race gives drivers the choice to prioritize ‘Endurance’ or ‘Sprint.’ The former maximizes range on the racetrack by limiting the peak power, while the latter favors power and produces shorter bursts of full energy. When the N Drift Optimizer is activated, the EV balances multiple vehicle controls to maintain the drift angle.
