All-electric 2024 Volvo XC40, C40 debuts in the Philippines

Volvo Philippines has added two new crossovers to its lineup - the XC40 P8 Recharge Twin and the C40 P8 Recharge Twin. Both are fully electric models that fall within the luxury subcompact class.

Based on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), these crossovers are nearly identical twins. The brand then says that they were designed from the ground up to provide their future owners with a safe personal mobility solution while having a minimal carbon footprint thanks to their more sustainable powertrains.

But what can a prospective buyer expect from the XC40 and C40 specs-wise? Let’s find out. 

Volvo XC40 and C40: Exterior

As fully electric rides, the XC40 and C40 crossovers sport a smooth frameless grille and a mostly closed-off front fascia. Their grilles are then flanked by a pair of LED headlamps integrating T-shaped LED daytime running lamps.

Both start out with the same sleek lines and shapes from the front. When viewed from the side, however, one can see that the C40 gets a more coupe-like roofline while the XC40 is more typical of crossover SUVs. As a result, the C40 gets a more angled rear window compared to the XC40. Both though, get the same curvy taillights, and a mostly smooth rear lower bumper. 

Other exterior features found on both the XC40 and C40 are a panoramic sunroof, a power tailgate, roof rails, power-folding side mirrors, etc. Both also ride on a set of 19-inch five-spoke black diamond cut wheels.

Size-wise, both the XC40 and C40 are 4,440mm long, 1,863mm wide, and 1,647mm in height. Both also have a wheelbase length of 2,702mm. The XC40 gets a ground clearance of 175mm, while the coupe-like C40 has less ground clearance at 171mm.

Step inside these crossovers and you’ll be greeted with a straightforward cockpit that features a mostly flat dashboard. The central touchscreen surround, air-conditioning vents, and the center console do get some glossy black decorative bits.

Keeping everyone cool inside the XC40 and C40 is a two-zone climate control system. Both models get a power-adjustable driver’s seat with a memory function, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, and power-folding head restraints for the rear seats. Both Volvo EVs can seat up to five.

Also found in both Volvo crossovers are premium textile upholstery, charcoal interior inserts, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, rain-sensing wipers, and illuminated vanity mirrors, among others.

These all-new EV models are provided with the latest and greatest advanced vehicle safety features developed by Volvo. Chief among these is the Pilot Assist system which can keep the vehicle within its lane with assistive steering. This works in conjunction with the vehicle’s adaptive cruise control. 

Driver awareness on both rides is ensured by blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert with rear automatic braking, and rear collision warning. Both also get a slippery road alert, road sign identification, and oncoming lane mitigation. The latter helps drivers avoid fender benders with vehicles in an oncoming lane.

Parking aboard the XC40 and C40 is likewise made easy thanks to a park assist system and a 360-degree view camera. As standard, both EVs are also equipped with ISOFIX child seat anchors, dual front airbags, a driver’s knee airbag, curtain airbags, hill-start assist, hill-descent control, anti-lock braking with electronic brake distribution, etc. 

For on-board entertainment, the XC40 and C40 get a nine-inch central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and USB connectivity. The screen is linked to a 13-piece Harman Kardon sound system while keeping devices topped up is made easy thanks to a wireless charging pad.

Of note, the said screen uses an Android Automotive operating system which supersedes Android Auto. 

Last but not least is the driver’s sizable 12-inch digital display. This is present on both the XC40 and C40, and it provides relevant information such as charge levels, vehicle range, and the usual vehicle parameters like speed and the status of the vehicle’s array of safety features. 

Volvo XC40 and C40: Powertrain

Propelling the XC40 and C40 are a duo of electric motors paired with a lithium-ion battery. At the maximum, this system can output 408 horsepower and 660 Nm of torque, and it uses a shift-by-wire gearbox sending power to all four wheels.

For range, the XC40 can cover 537 kilometers on a single charge. The C40 meanwhile, offers a range of 549 km. If using DC fast charging, both vehicles can typically go from 10 percent to 80 percent battery level in 27 minutes. 

While those figures sound identical, the C40 is the quicker vehicle. According to Volvo, it can do zero to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds. The XC40 meanwhile, is a tad slower with a zero to 100 km/h of 4.9 seconds. Both, however, have a top speed (with limiter) of 180 km/h.

For the Philippine market, the XC40 P8 Recharge Twin has an introductory price of Php 3,990,000. The C40 P8 Recharge Twin meanwhile, has an introductory price of Php 4,190,000.

Both cars are packaged together with an eight-year battery warranty, a five-year roadside assistance service, and a 3-year comprehensive car warranty. Each purchase of either also comes with one wall box charger and an unlimited digital update service.
