The 2023 SsangYong Torres is revealed with an aggressive and rugged SUV design that is not far off from the sketch photos the automaker published last month. According to the company, the Torres is expected to create an additional segment that will open up new opportunities for its future.

Exterior

It is still unclear whether the SsangYong Torres will utilize a unibody or a ladder frame chassis. But the automaker did mention that the new model is slotted in between the Korando compact crossover and the Rexton midsize SUV in its range.

As for the design, the theme is unmistakably a rugged SUV from the front to the back. The front fascia is highlighted by its striking daytime running lights (DRLs) and a grille with six vertical slats. Meanwhile, the sides are integrated with large black wheel fenders, as well as a storage box that looks like the one on the Land Rover Defender.

Interior

The premium-looking cabin finish found in other SsangYong models is also brought into the Torres. Among the interior features include leather upholstery, ambient lighting, ventilated front seats, 8-way power-adjustable driver seat, automatic climate control, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with heating functions.

To enhance the Korean SUV’s ‘Utilitarian’ characteristic, the automaker maximized the cargo area to offer 703 liters of space. It can be expanded to 1,662 liters of space with the second-row seats folded down. As of this writing, no third-row seats have been revealed by the company.

Tech & Safety

The dashboard features three screens, namely a digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, and an 8-inch touchscreen for the climate controls. These provide an innovative driving experience that is complemented by its premium-looking interior design.

Safety-wise, the new model is equipped with autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot assist, lane keep assist, automatic high beam, and tire pressure monitoring. It also has Adaptive Cruise Control with a stop-and-go function, allowing a more convenient drive by reducing driver fatigue, especially on the highway.

Engine & Performance

Reports suggest that the Torres will be using a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine found in its compact crossover sibling. It is capable of generating 168 horsepower and 280 Nm of torque. A 6-speed automatic transmission sends power to either the front wheels or all four wheels.

No diesel power units have been introduced. But the automaker is said to roll out a fully electric version of the Torres sometime next year. One can expect that this electrified version will be utilizing the same powertrain components as the Korando e-Motion EV (electric vehicle).

The 2023 SsangYong Torres is available in its homeland with a price that ranges from 26,900,000 Korean won (around Php 1,109,000) for the base T5 and goes up to 30,400,000 Korean won (Php 1,253,000) for the top-of-the-line T7.
