Toyota plans to fast-track production as supplies normalize

The company plans to make up for lost time. 

After having to endure plant closures and production cutbacks on account of COVID-19, Toyota wants to jump-start production by the end of the year in a bid to recover lost ground as its supply chains are slowly stabilizing.

Citing an anonymous company source, Reuters reports that Toyota has asked its suppliers to ramp up assembly and delivery of components. The goal is to build 97,000 vehicles between December 2021 and March 2022, with some considering working additional shifts on weekends. Asked for comment, a Toyota spokesperson replied that nothing has been decided about production plans beyond November 2021. 

“COVID infection rates in Southeast Asia are dropping dramatically and people’s concerns about production risk are easing,” said Takashi Miyao, researcher for automotive industry consultant Carnorama. “It looks like the industry is emerging from a tunnel.”

The automaker was previously forced to scale back its worldwide production target by 360,000 vehicles for the financial year to end-March, on account of rising COVID-19 cases in ASEAN countries where it has production facilities. Plant shutdowns have caused manufacturing to slow down in Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, in addition to a global semiconductor shortage that has disrupted the output of major car brands.

In its home market of Japan, Toyota announced production adjustments for August and suspended operations in 27 out of 28 assembly lines across 14 plants through September 2021. Among those affected are the 2022 Land Cruiser (with wait times stretching up to four years) as well as selected models from Toyota’s luxury brand Lexus. 

Although the 2011 earthquake in East Japan had motivated the company to reinforce its supply network against disruptions, the calamity’s effects were not as far-reaching globally as COVID-19. Aside from component makers bringing production to a halt, semiconductors needed for in-car electronics were diverted towards consumer products such as computers and smartphones as more people had to work and study at home.
