Toyota GR 86 sells out in less than 2 hours in UK

Like literal hotcakes.

Everyone seems to be excited about the Toyota GR 86. After all, it is a follow-up, or rather the second-generation model of the well-received GT 86. The hype train for this new sports car model was so intense that the entire allocation for the UK market was just sold out in 90 minutes, which is less than 2 hours.

The 2022 Toyota GR 86

It came to the point that Toyota had to cut-off its UK ordering platform when the limit for the model in question was hit.

This sounds good in theory, but do note that Toyota only intends to build the GR 86 in a span of only two years. The brand also told a UK-based publication by the name of Autocar, that it doesn’t have any plans of expanding the GR 86’s allocation for the UK market at this stage.

Of note, the UK-spec 2022 Toyota GR 86 is priced at just £29,995. At current conversion rates, that’s around Php 2 million pesos. This makes it one of the more affordable sports cars on the market.

It also improves upon the outgoing GT 86 as it now comes with a larger 2.4-liter boxer four capable of making up to 232 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. Its wheelbase was also extended for better stability when going fast, and it also means that it might make for a potent drift car as well.

Relatively affordable performance cars like the GR 86 will always gain attention

Going back to the topic at hand, this might set a precedent for what will happen here in the Philippine market. It might not sell as fast as it did in the UK, but there might be some who will be left out on getting this new Toyota sports car.

Toyota Motor Philippines however, nor Toyota Motor Corporation itself, is yet to reveal how long the GR 86’s production will run in the ASEAN region. There is a possibility though, that it might be as limited as the model’s Europe production run. Take this with a healthy grain of salt due to the fact that it might change if Toyota relents to the demand for the GR 86.
