Toyota’s Honorary Chairman Shoichiro Toyoda has died at the age of 97. He is the son of Toyota founder, Kiichiro Toyoda. Shoichiro is also the father of Toyota’s outgoing President and CEO, Akio Toyoda.
Dr. Toyoda was a key figure in expanding Toyota's global reach
Dr. Shoichiro Toyoda has had a long and fruitful career in the automotive industry. In 1952, he formally joined Toyota Motors. As an engineer who graduated from the prestigious Nagoya University in Japan, Dr. Toyoda worked in engineering labs and on the factory floor during the early stages of his career.
He then eventually climbed the ranks to become a senior managing director in 1967, as executive vice president in 1972, and the company’s President of Marketing in the 1980s.
When 1982 rolled around, Toyota Motor Co.’s merged its sales and production organizations forming what we know today as Toyota Motor Corporation. Dr. Toyoda himself spearheaded this effort, and eventually, he became the said organization’s first-ever president.
Under his leadership during the 1990s, Toyota Motor Corporation managed to penetrate the North American market. It was also under his helm when Toyota’s luxury arm, Lexus, was officially introduced.
Toyoda played a huge role in making Toyota a household name in the USA
In 2007, Dr. Toyoda was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame. He also held several national honors and decorations from various states. Examples of these include the Grand Collar of the Order of Lakandula of the Philippines, the rank of Kight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (UK), and the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Paulownia Followers of Japan. Of note, the latter is the highest honor within the Japanese honors system.
Of note, the Toyota Motor Company will be planning a farewell gathering for Dr. Shoichiro Toyoda. This is after a private funeral ceremony which will be attended by close family only.
Akio Toyoda, the eldest son of Dr. Toyoda and the current president and CEO of Toyota, will be stepping down from the company’s leadership role by April 1. Akio Toyoda will then be replaced by Koji Sato, the current president of Lexus.
