TRB approves SCTEX toll fee increase happening this June

Heads up for travelers to the country’s northern regions: the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) has greenlit toll fee adjustments for the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) effective June 1, 2022. 

Traveling to and from the northern parts of Luzon will be a little more expensive 

The new rates entail an additional Php 0.78 per kilometer. Under the revised toll fee matrix, Class 1 vehicles traveling from Mabalacat City in Pampanga to Tarlac and vice versa will be charged an additional Php 31.00. Class 2 vehicles plying the same route will pay an additional Php 61.00, while Class 3 vehicles will add Php 92.00 on top of the current fee. 

Rates will also go up for motorists traveling between Mabalacat City and Tipo in Hermosa, Bataan, which is situated near the Subic Freeport area. Class 1 vehicles will be charged an additional Php 49.00, Class 2 vehicles will pay Php 98.00 more, while Class 3 vehicles will need an additional Php 147.00. 

Provincial buses will be allowed to pay the old fees for the next three months

According to NLEX Corporation which operates SCTEX, the rate increase was in accordance with regulatory procedures and went through a thorough review, adding that this confirms periodic rate adjustments due in 2017. The company adds that it will provide toll subsidies for public utility buses (PUBs) as well as a grace period of three months, in order to help them cope with the revised rates. 

State-owned Bases Conversion Development Authority (BCDA) owns SCTEX, which is designated R-8 of the Metro Manila arterial road network. With a length of 93.7 kilometers, the four-lane thoroughfare is considered the country’s longest expressway. 

Construction started in 2005, partly funded by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), with the expressway opening to the public in 2008. Management, operations, and maintenance of SCTEX were privatized and awarded to NLEX Corporation in 2015. 

To date, the company has invested Php 2.6 billion in upgrades to the thoroughfare. These include new toll plazas, bridge repairs, additional technologies for monitoring traffic, and integration with the North Luzon Expressway.
