QC’s Traffic and Transport Management Department (TTMD) and the MMDA worked together in establishing road markings for the exclusive motorcycle lane and public utility vehicle (PUV) lane on Commonwealth Avenue. QC shared that Engr. Danneedee Bobadilla is spearheading the team that’s in charge of putting the necessary road markings.

The exclusive motorcycle lane along Commonwealth Avenue was first brought up last October 2022. The MMDA held a two-day workshop that discussed policy directions and guidelines for motorcycles and other PUVs.

Former MMDA acting chairman Carlo Dimayuga III previously said that the exclusive motorcycle lane is meant to help reduce road accidents and improve traffic flow on Commonwealth Avenue. The QC government also believes that the said lane will yield positive results.

Based on MMDA Resolution No. 22-15, the right outermost lane of Commonwealth Avenue (nearest to the sidewalk) is designated as the exclusive bike lane. The second lane is for PUVs while the third lane is the exclusive motorcycle lane. The other remaining lanes are for other motor vehicles.

1-Rider Partylist Representatives Bonifacio Bosita and Rodge Gutierrez showed their appreciation regarding the MMDA’s plan of having an exclusive motorcycle lane.

“We are one with the MMDA in this kind of initiatives which recognize motorcycle riders as the most exposed and at-risk sector on the roads, right now,” Bosita and Gutierrez said.

A research published by the International Association of Traffic and Safety Services (IATSS) said that having an exclusive motorcycle lane “has been proven a beneficial strategy.” It is said to provide “safe (14% lower injury likelihood) and fast movement (increased travel speed approximately by 10 km/h) to motorcycle riders and reduce motorcycle accidents with other road users.”

The implementation of exclusive motorcycle lanes in Taiwan and Indonesia has been effective in reducing road accidents. In Malaysia, it was reported that motorcycle accidents went down by 39 percent when the exclusive motorcycle lane was implemented.
