The exclusive Commonwealth motorcycle lane is a go

It was earlier this month when the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) handed the motorcycle lane plan over to MMC for approval. The project was discussed during the MMDA’s two-day Motorcycle Consultation Workshop joined by various government agencies, including public utility vehicle (PUV) and motorcycle rider groups.

In the MMDA Resolution No 22-15, the right outermost lane of Commonwealth Avenue shall be designated as an exclusive bicycle lane. Next to it will be dedicated to public utility vehicles (PUVs) such as jeeps, UV express, and buses. And as for the exclusive motorcycle lane, it will be set on the third lane, with the rest for other motor vehicles.

The goal of the exclusive motorcycle lane is to ensure safety among road users along Commonwealth Avenue. In a report by the MMDA Traffic Engineering Center, Commonwealth Avenue saw a total of 1,010 fatal, non-fatal, and damage-to-property accidents involving motorcycles. Its new and dedicated lane should safeguard motorcyclists from such incidents.

Moreover, the agency aims to better manage traffic along Commonwealth Avenue with the approved motorcycle lane. This is further underscored now that more motorists are out on the road due to lower quarantine restrictions and the return of face-to-face classes.

Now that the MMC and MMDA agreed in principle to establish exclusive lanes for such riders and motorists to avert road accidents, the agency will start implementing guidelines in cooperation with the Quezon City local government unit (LGU). The agency will also partner with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to install appropriate traffic signs and apply proper lane markings along Commonwealth Avenue from Elliptical Road to Doña Carmen Subdivision.

“The exclusive motorcycle lanes located at the third lane from the right along Commonwealth will depend upon the road conditions as the road has some inconsistencies in terms of lane width due to different construction projects,” said MMDA Acting Chairman Engr. Carlo Dimayuga III.
