The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced that the construction of the Panguil Bay Bridge project is in full swing. It is a 3.17-km inter-island bridge that will connect Tangub City and Tubod across Panguil Bay in Northern Mindanao.

Unified Project Management Office (UPMO) Operations Undersecretary Emil K. Sadain stated that the prestressed-concrete (PC) house for main bridge pylon 2 was successfully installed. It is mounted with welded brackets to prevent the movement of the housing. The government agency will ensure that marine vessels such as ships could pass underneath the project’s main bridge.

“Waterproof sealings are ongoing to ensure the water-tightness between the pile and boxlike PC house as this will then filled inside with cast concrete to act as cofferdam or strong foundation to make them stable against various forces which are likely to act on the structure,” said Undersecretary Sadain.

Funded by a loan agreement between the Government of the Philippines (GOP) and the Korean Export-Import Bank (Korea Eximbank), the DPWH is committed to increasing its efforts to complete the Panguil Bay Bridge as soon as possible due to the disruptions caused by the pandemic. Some of the ongoing activities for the project include PC house fabrication, rebar cage installation, and pier cap concrete pouring.

By December 2023, motorists can expect the completion of the P7.375-billion inter-island. Positioned to be the longest bridge project in Mindanao upon completion, the Panguil Bay Bridge aims to provide a 7-minute travel time between Tangub City and Tubod.

The Panguil Bay Bridge isn’t the only ongoing DPWH project for constructing an inter-island bridge. In the Visayas, the government agency is completing the Cebu Cordova Bridge by installing safety barriers, piping, handrails, among others. It links Cebu City to Mactan Island through its 8.5-km toll bridge under the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC).
