Following the groundbreaking ceremony held late last year, NLEX Corporation started the construction of the 3-kilometer NLEX Connector Sta. Mesa Section. This part of the entire eight-km NLEX Connector is one of the two sections of the project that runs between Sta. Mesa and Sampaloc.

The first effort in completing the elevated, four-lane expressway is building a total of 72 piers as support for the infrastructure. It will run above the Philippine National Railways (PNR) lines, which is part of the Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) North-South railway project.
“Progress of the NLEX Connector Sta. Mesa Section will be more visible now as we start laying the foundation for this segment. The bored piles are crucial in providing a sturdy base for our elevated project,” said NLEX Corporation President and General Manager J. Luigi L. Bautista.
Both the NLEX Corporation and DPWH are working closely to complete the construction of the NLEX Connector to decongest Metro Manila traffic. Also, the expressway project will provide trucks with a 24/7 alternative route as it will be open to all vehicle classes, supporting the delivery of goods and services.

The toll road company said that the expressway project is expected to accommodate around 35,000 vehicles daily once the project is completed. It is also seen to reduce the travel time between NLEX and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) from two hours to 20 minutes.
Additionally, the NLEX Connector will improve the connectivity between the seaports in Manila and airports in NAIA and Clark. With the expressway, motorists can expect a travel time between Clark and Calamba of one hour and 40 minutes instead of three hours.
Aside from the NLEX Connector, the toll road company will be busy constructing various projects as part of its 2022 expansion plan. Other projects that are expected to be completed this year include the NLEX C5 Link Mindanao Avenue-Quirino Highway Section and the Candaba Third Viaduct.
