New five-kilometer Candaba viaduct in NLEX to be completed next year

The North Luzon Expressway Corporation (NLEX Corp.) has announced that a new, five-kilometer-long bridge on the Candaba viaduct will be built together with the Leighton Asia construction company. 

The third bridge will be positioned between the two existing bridges [Judgefloro]

Essentially, this is a third bridge that will be positioned between the two existing Candaba bridges. It is then slated to be completed in 2024 and will cost a total of Php 6.1 billion.

With the addition of the third bridge, NLEX Corp. says that motorist safety and convenience are better ensured. This is because the additional bridge will allow for the addition of inner and outer shoulder sections for both the southbound lane and the northbound lane.  

According to NLEX Chief Luigi Bautista, Leighton Asia was chosen after an evaluation and bidding process. He further added that NLEX trusts the said company due to its knowledge and experience in “building safe and high-quality roads and bridges.” 

Projects that were completed by Leighton Asia in the Philippines include the NLEX Harbor Link Road and the NLEX R10 exit ramp. The company is likewise handling the Cavite section of the Cavite-Laguna Expressway.

Leighton Asia General Manager for Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia Jan Torka likewise commented that they are honored to once again work together with NLEX Corp. Combined with their international expertise and local experience, he assured that the project will see a “safe and successful delivery.”  

Remember also that this new third bridge follows the recent safety upgrades for the Candaba viaduct that was in turn started back in 2021. 

Some of these upgrades include new bridge link slabs, as well as the strengthening of bridge columns via steel jacketing. Lay-bys or emergency stops on both the northbound and southbound lanes of the Candaba Viaduct were also built.
