The Metro Manila Council wants further review of MMDA’s proposal.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority’s (MMDA) proposed modified number coding is still pending approval. MMDA chairman Romando Artes said that the two-day number coding scheme has yet to get the green light from the Metro Manila Council, composed of 17 mayors in the National Capital Region (NCR).

MMDA's proposed number coding scheme is still up for approval

Artes noted that the proposed modified number coding scheme is still being discussed by the MMC, which has requested additional data from the MMDA. The agency’s chief added that the proposed policy was discussed by the MMC before the May 9 national elections but has yet to release an official statement on whether it will be approved.

The MMDA is also getting suggestions to postpone the implementation of the proposed modified number coding scheme, and wait for the new administration to decide on the matter. Again, the two-day number coding scheme is still just a proposal and has yet to get a go signal.

Artes shared that there’s also a suggestion to conduct a quarterly review of the proposed scheme if ever it will be implemented before President Rodrigo Duterte’s term ends.

The proposed two-day number coding scheme aims to reduce traffic by as much as 40 percent, according to the MMDA. This prohibits private vehicles on roads from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. two days a week, depending on the last digit of the license plate.

Of note, it was previously reported that Transport Network Vehicle Service (TNVS) such as Grab, motorcycles, public utility jeepneys, buses, and taxicabs are excluded from the proposed two-day number coding scheme.

That said, the current number coding scheme is still in effect from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with vehicles prohibited to drive on public roads once a week. Vehicles with plates ending in 1 and 2 are not allowed on Metro Manila roads on Mondays; 3 and 4 on Tuesdays; 5 and 6 on Wednesdays; 7 and 8 on Thursdays; and 9 and 0 on Fridays.

Motorists should take note that Makati City is implementing the number coding from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
