The new MMDA chief said that this will be conducted on a regular basis.

Earlier this month, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) made it clear that it will intensify its clearing operations led by Edison “Bong” Nebrija. The latest area the government agency operated is along Panay Avenue in Quezon City, which is part of Mabuhay Lane route #1.

A total of 23 tickets were issued for illegally parked vehicles, including two towed units. According to the MMDA, the penalty for attended parked vehicles is Php 1,000, while unattended ones get a Php 2,000 fine. New MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said that they will conduct regular clearing operations on all Mabuhay Lanes.

“The MMDA is serious in its bid to decongest EDSA and provide motorists with alternate routes that are passable and free from obstructions. We are closely coordinating with the local government units and the Department of Interior and Local Government to ensure that these roads will be maintained obstruction-free,” said Artes.

MMDA’s target is to clear Metro Manila roads from obstructions within three months. It aims to turn over the roads to the next administration obstruction-free. The clearing operations are expected to run smoothly as the Chairman said that the number of cars on the roads is still below pre-pandemic levels.

He said that part of the reason for this is soaring fuel prices, which have been projected to reach Php 81.1 per liter. As such, the expansion of the number coding scheme is still on hold.

“We want to ensure that at the end of our term, we will turnover obstruction-free and orderly Metro Manila roads to the next administration,” added Artes.

Another intensified program the MMDA is keeping an eye on is the apprehension of “colorum” or unregistered public utility vehicles (PUVs). This aims to crack down on PUVs illegally plying their routes, especially now that quarantine restrictions have been eased under Alert Level 1.
