MMDA releases traffic management plan for Marcos Jr.’s second SONA

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) released its traffic management plan for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s second State of the Nation (SONA). Like previous SONAs before, it will be held at the House of Representatives in Batasan Hills, Quezon City. The 2023 edition of the SONA is scheduled for July 24, at 4 p.m.

MMDA will manage traffic in Quezon City for the 2023 SONA

The government agency will deploy 1,354 personnel to manage the expected heavy traffic along Commonwealth Avenue. The new MMDA Command Center in Pasig City will also be put to good use in ensuring good traffic management in the area.

Since heavy traffic is expected, motorists are advised to take alternative routes, which were provided below as per the MMDA:

Northbound (Quezon Memorial Circle to Fairview)

• Vehicles from Elliptical Road should take North Avenue, right turn at Mindanao Avenue, then right turn to Sauyo Road, or take Quirino Highway to reach the point of destination.

Southbound (Fairview to Quezon Memorial Circle)

• Vehicles from Commonwealth Avenue should take Sauyo Road or Quirino Highway, turn left at Mindanao Avenue, then turn left at North Avenue to reach the point of destination.

For light vehicles

• Light vehicles from C5 Road may turn left at Magiting St., turn right at Maginhawa St., and turn left at Mayaman St. to Kalayaan Avenue to reach the point of destination.

For trucks

• All trucks coming from C5 along Katipunan Avenue should take Luzon Flyover and then turn left at Congressional Avenue to reach the point of destination.

Aside from traffic personnel, the MMDA will deploy ambulances, tow trucks, motorcycle units, and flood mitigation equipment in the area. The agency will also intensify clearing operations in coordination with the Quezon City government to ensure that alternative routes are passable.

Alternative routes for NB and SB motorists

“Preparations are in full swing for us to ensure that traffic will be orderly along Commonwealth Avenue, IBP Road, and all other thoroughfares surrounding the House of Representatives. SONA-related activities, as well as transport strike, will be monitored at the newly-inaugurated MMDA Communications and Command Center,” said MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Don Artes.

The agency also rolled out alternate routes for light vehicles and trucks

In related news, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) looks to deliver 5,000 driver’s license plastic cards to motorists before the president’s second SONA. In the next 60 days, the LTO is promising to produce one million plastic cards to address the shortage of cards announced earlier this year.
