Hyundai Motor Group is bridging the past to its future direction with the global premiere of the Pony Coupe Concept restoration project at the Hyundai Reunion event.
Hyundai Pony Coupe Concept
Unveiled at the 1974 Turin Motor Show, the Hyundai Pony Coupe Concept arrives with the future aesthetics imagined back in the 70s. It inspired the design of many new Hyundai models including the hydrogen-powered N Vision 74 and the Ioniq 5, an all-electric compact crossover that is made available in the Philippine lineup.
Present at the Hyundai Reunion was Giorgetto Giugiaro, who is the original designer of the car. He was joined by his son Fabrizio Giugiaro who was also tapped by the Korean automaker to complete the restoration.
“The restoration of this unique vehicle is a milestone in Hyundai’s history. It represents our beginnings and our commitment to the future. It serves as a legacy for generations to come. It virtually symbolizes the mobile relay baton we are passing from the past to the future of the company,” said Hyundai Motor Group President and Chief Creative Officer Luc Donckerwolke.
It makes a return after nearly 50 years
Coming with an unmistakable retro-futuristic styling, the Pony Coupe Concept has origami-like exterior features such as flowing geometric lines, a sleek roofline, and a uniquely-shaped B-pillar. It is also designed with “coda tronca,” giving a slim hatch silhouette.
Hyundai incorporated a minimalist approach into the interior, showcasing the car’s monocoque design and driver-centered floating architecture. A single-spoke steering wheel and two-toned slim-line bucket seats are also integrated into the cabin.

Under the hood is a 1.2-liter inline-4 gasoline engine good for 82 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. It has a front longitudinal engine layout that sends power to the rear wheels.
“The Pony Coupe Concept reflects the company’s gratitude and dedication to the challenging spirits that people at Hyundai had back in 1974,” said Hyundai Design Center Executive Vice President and Head, SangYup Lee.
