Hyundai’s next-gen EV platform aims 50 percent more driving range

It also aims to standardize core EV components.

Technology is one of the driving forces that push the automotive industry to constantly innovate its products. Hyundai Motor Group (HMG), composed of Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis, is one of the car companies that understand the need to adapt to the future.

HMG laid out its plan moving forward during the Unlock the Software Age global online forum. The Korean automaker emphasized the importance of software development in future cars. HMG also shared that it will be introducing two new electric vehicle (EV) platforms in 2025.

The new EV platforms will be segmented under HMG’s Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA) system. The company said that the IMA system intends to standardize core EV components, resulting in more efficient vehicle development. With standard batteries and electric motors, HMG can easily supply components to each of its EVs.

One of the two new EV platforms is called eM, which is being developed for HMG’s EVs across all segments. HMG said that the eM platform will offer a 50 percent increase in electric driving range on a single charge. It is also seen to support Level 3 or higher autonomous driving technology, and Over-The-Air (OTA) software updates.

To put that in perspective, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 currently has an EV driving range of 614 km. Once the new eM platform rolls out, the Ioniq 6’s EV driving range could extend up to 921 km.

HMG’s other new EV platform is called eS, which will be developed for Purpose Built Vehicles (PBVs). PBVs are electric vehicles that intend to meet various business purposes and needs. The eS platform features an expandable “skateboard” architecture that can be altered based on specific purposes and/or needs. This allows PBVs to be tailor-made for companies operating in the delivery, logistics, and car-hailing sectors.

“These new [EV] platforms are evolving under Hyundai Motor Group's 'Integrated Modular Architecture', which will lead to further standardization and modularization of core components of electric vehicles, such as batteries and motors, while offering advantages in sectors additional to electric vehicles,” HMG Executive Vice President of Head of Electronics & Infotainment Development Center Paul Choo.
