Despite the third-generation Honda HR-V subcompact crossover selling in global markets, the U.S. has its own version, and the latter is what the automaker is renaming as the ZR-V bound for China.
If you think the upcoming Honda ZR-V looks familiar, you're not wrong
GAC-Honda, which will be responsible for marketing the subcompact crossover in the Chinese mainland, released promotional images of the new model. It’s essentially the same HR-V heading for American customers in 2023, right down to the fascia with the octagonal grille, slim LED headlamps with daytime running lights, and a front bumper with C-shaped moldings.
There are no available pictures of the interior, but it would be safe to assume that both the U.S. and China versions will share an identical cabin, with minor tweaks for Honda’s Chinese clientele.
Even the rear looks the same, although the twin tailpipes might be exclusive to China
As the U.S.-spec HR-V is based on the 11th-generation Civic, it also comes with a 1.5-L turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine rated at 180 horsepower and 240 Nm of torque. It stands to reason that the ZR-V will receive the same power unit, if the ‘240 Turbo’ badge on the sculpted tailgate is any indication, which can also be found on other Honda models in China such as the CR-V, Breeze, Avancier, and UR-V.
Gearbox options are anticipated to comprise a 5-speed manual and a continuously variable transmission. Note that the Honda ZR-V will not be limited to the Middle Kingdom. The carmaker bared plans to sell it in Europe as well, positioned as the larger counterpart of the current HR-V, with a full hybrid powertrain.
The ZR-V will likely get the Civic's 1.5-liter turbocharged power unit
As if it couldn’t get any more confusing, the ZR-V badge is also rumored to be worn by the production version of the SUV RS Concept that Honda previewed at the 2021 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS). This model will be positioned against the Toyota Raize.
GAC-Honda is already fielding inquiries for the upcoming ZR-V, with a formal launch scheduled within the year.
