The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced that it will be expanding the bike lane network in Quezon City. This is under the organization’s Active Transport and Public Transport Infrastructure Improvement initiative, and it will be done in cooperation with the Quezon City local government.
The presentation of the plan for the bike lanes of Quezon City
This plan was put into formality during a meeting attended by personnel from the DOTr, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), and the Quezon City government. Present during the said event was DOTr Active Transport Program Management Office (ATPMO) Program Manager EnP. Eldon Dionisio, MMDA Head of Traffic Engineering Center Planning and Design Division Engr. Dannedee Bobadilla, QC Assistant City Administrator for Operations Alberto Kimpo, and others.
The plan to build additional bike lanes in Quezon City was presented and discussed at the said meeting. Aside from the additional bike lanes, the DOTr also showed its plans for smoothing out the public utility bus stops and public utility jeepney stops along the Elliptical Road and Commonwealth area. The DOTr explained that the improvement of the bus and jeepney stops will aid in assuring cyclists’ safety on the said roads.
A dry run will then be implemented in order for motorists as well as cyclists to become familiar with the new road configuration resulting from the said project.
The DOTr is looking to make the roads safer for cyclists
If one remembers, the Metro Manila Bike Lane Network was inaugurated back in July 2021. This was because the option of riding on bikes as a form of transportation was deemed a necessity during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In that year, around 497 kilometers of bike lanes were completed in major cities nationwide. Around 300 kilometers of those are situated in Metro Manila.
The DOTr likewise opened 55 kilometers of bike lanes in Davao City. Cebu in turn has around 129 kilometers of bike lanes as well.
In talking of bike lanes in the said areas, these of course include the now familiar green color for the actual lane, signages, separators, road markings, etc.
