DPWH to start tunneling works for Davao City Bypass Road this July

The Department of Public Works and Highway (DPWH) has been unrelenting in its task to construct more roads, especially in Metro Manila, with the NLEX Connector in Manila as one of its ongoing projects. Now, it is delivering its impressive work all the way down to Davao City as it announced its tunneling works for the Davao City Bypass Road.

Financed by the Official Development Assistance (ODA) of the Government of Japan thru the Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA), the construction of the two 2.3-km central portion tunnels of the Davao City Bypass in Southern Mindanao is projected to commence in July 2021.

Overall, the Davao City Bypass Road has a total length of 45.5 km which is divided into six packages. The contract package with 37 months duration covers the construction of bridges in three locations and a 7.9 km kilometer-long cut and fill road.

Meanwhile, the said tunnel of the project’s central portion is part of Contract Package 1-1, covering 10.7 km of four-lane highway awarded in the amount of Php 13 billion to the joint venture companies of Shimizu Corporation, Uticon Builders Inc., and Takenaka Civil Engineering & Construction Co, Ltd.

DPWH Secretary Mark Villar said that his agency is just waiting for the specialized equipment to arrive. These include four units of drill jumbo and four concrete spraying machines that will work simultaneously at the north and south portals of the tunnel.

The Davao City Bypass Road project aims to reduce the travel time from 1 hour and 44 minutes to just 49 minutes. It starts from the Davao-Digos section of the Pan-Philippine Highway in Brgy. Sirawan, Davao City, going to the Davao-Panabo section of the Pan-Philippine Highway in Brgy. J.P. Laurel, Panabo City.
