The organizers now shift their attention to the show’s Doha edition.

When the pandemic hit in 2020, we have seen the improbable cancellation of long-time running auto shows to prioritize safety. One of these is the Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS), which just recently announced that it will postpone its show for the fourth consecutive year.

According to the “Comité permanent du Salon International de I’automobile de Genève” foundation, the organizers of the GIMS 2023, the uncertainties in the global economy and the health challenges brought by the pandemic influenced its decision to cancel the show.

“Due to the uncertainties in the global economy and geopolitics, as well as the risks related to the development of the pandemic, the organizers have decided to focus exclusively on the planning of the event in Doha in 2023,” said Foundation President Maurice Turettini.

The original plan was to hold GIMS 2023 in two editions. One is slated at Palexpo in Geneva which should happen from February 14 to 19 next year. Meanwhile, the second edition is scheduled in Doha, Qatar in November of the same year.

The Doha edition is still a go

With that being said, the organizers stated that they will focus on the Doha Edition which will be a first for the auto show. The first edition of the Geneva International Motor Show Qatar will be held at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC). It will also offer many “unique and spectacular” driving experiences to visitors.

While the return of auto shows is still unclear to some regions, one can be glad that the Middle East is starting to open up to various car events. Since 2020, renowned motorsports such as Formula 1 and Dakar Rally held races in the Middle East. Now, the 117-year-old GIMS will be premiering in the said region next year.

“We have done everything possible to ensure that we could host GIMS 2023 in Geneva in February. The enhanced event format and project had been very well received. But in the end, the risks overweight the opportunity,” added Turenttini.
