Can the 2022 MG One disrupt the foothold of Geely Coolray, Ford Territory? 

The all-new 2022 MG One crossover made its global debut. And interestingly enough, MG Philippines posted several pictures of the model a couple of days before the said event. To that end, we can speculate that it might be introduced to the local market as well.

So, what’s special about the MG One, and can it rival the likes of the Geely Coolray and Ford Territory?

Well for starters, both of the MG One’s variants are oozing with style. That’s right, there are two styling packages for this model, namely the MG One Alpha and the MG One Beta. To put it simply, the MG One Alpha utilizes a more compact grille, while the MG One Beta comes with a larger grille that stretches across the width of the car.  

Other than that, both versions feature a two-tone blacktop paint scheme, sharp headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lamps, sleek roof rails, as well an aggressive-looking bonnet.

MG is yet to release pictures of the crossover’s interior though but, the Chinese marque mentioned that it will be spacious. The company also didn’t divulge any details regarding what kind of tech this car is packing. 

So in relation to the question at hand, it is still unknown whether it can indeed go against the tech-heavy Ford and Geely subcompact crossover models.  

With regards to power though, several reports are saying that the MG One will be using a turbocharged 1.5-liter mill that’s capable of making up to 181 horsepower and 285 Nm of torque. The said engine is then linked to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

If the said power and torque outputs turn out to be true for the hypothetical Philippine-spec MG One, then it is more than a match against the Geely Coolray in terms of power.  

Do note however that the new SAIC Sigma architecture that the new model uses allows it to utilize a multitude of power plant options. On this note, there are a lot of alternate possibilities for the MG One when it comes to engines, and no details were given regarding which country gets which powertrain. As a side note, it can indeed use a hybrid engine setup.
