MRT, LRT-2 to offer free rides on Rizal Day

The Libreng Sakay program will be back for a day.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced that the MRT-3 (Metro Rail Transit System Line 3) and LRT-2 (Light Rail Transit Line 2) will offer the Libreng Sakay program on Rizal Day.

MRT will offer free rides on Rizal Day

With the Libreng Sakay program, commuters can ride the said railway lines for free on December 30, 2022. The free MRT-3 and LRT-2 rides will be available between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., as well as between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

The free rides program will be rolled out to remember Dr. Jose Rizal and his heroism for the country. It will its 126th anniversary with the theme, “Rizal: Alaalang Iningatan, Yaman Ngayon ng Bayan.”

To note, the first LRT-2 trip at Recto and Antipolo stations will start at 5:00 a.m. Meanwhile, the last trips at Antipolo Station and Recto Station will be at 9:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., respectively.

“Ang Libreng Sakay ay bilang pakikiisa ng MRT-3 sa paggunita ng Araw ni Rizal. Nawa ang kanyang sakripisyo ay manatiling buhay sa ating diwa at patuloy na magsilbing inspirasyon sa atin upang gumawa ng mabuti para sa kapwa at bayan,” said MRT-3 General Manager Engr. Federico J. Canar, Jr.

Commuters who plan to use public transportation such as railway transits are obliged to observe the “7 Commandments” to avoid COVID-19 transmissions. The seven commandments include the following:

  1. Wearing of face mask and voluntary face shield
  2. No talking on the phone
  3. No eating and drinking
  4. Maintain proper ventilation in PUVs (public utility vehicles)
  5. Disinfect regularly
  6. Persons with COVID-19 symptoms aren’t allowed on public transportation
  7. Observing social distancing

Aside from commuters, private vehicle owners will also enjoy free transport fees courtesy of San Miguel Corporation (SMC). From 10:00 p.m. on December 29 to 6:00 a.m. on January 1, 2023, expressways that use Autosweep RFID will be free of toll fees.
