Curing the cause of the NAIA Christmas traffic crush.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), conducted a clearing operation in the vicinity of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on January 9, 2023. This was done in cooperation with the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) Traffic Police Division, the Pasay City Local Government, and the InterAgency Council for Traffic (I-ACT.)

The routes around NAIA are plagued by illegally parked vehicles

The clearing operation was headed by MMDA Task Force on Clearing Operations Col. Edison “Bong'' Nebrija. A total of 35 violations were then recorded by the enforcers of the MMDA. Out of those, 29 were issued tickets, and a total of 13 vehicles were also impounded.

According to both the MIAA and the MMDA, the appropriate fines and penalties shall be imposed on those who were found to have violated existing traffic laws. Charges against the violators will also be filed in court if deemed necessary.

The said operation was performed in order to clear out the illegally parked vehicles and colorum violators, particularly the “habal-habal” motorcycles that have been operating around the airport complex. It was also a response to the heavy traffic that was observed around the area during the 2022 Christmas season.

Visiting NAIA with your car? Then better look for a proper parking spot.

MIAA general manager Cesar Chiong said that these issues have been “hounding the airport complex for years.” As such, he has given his thanks to the MMDA in pitching in to help solve the airport’s traffic-related woes.

Do note that the clearing operation mentioned above is just the start. In fact, the MIAA and the MMDA will continue working together to keep NAIA’s surroundings clear of obstructions that may hamper the flow of traffic.

The MMDA and its enforcers’ presence will likewise continue to be present on NAIA’s thoroughfares moving forward. To that end, we might be able to see a more seamless traffic flow at the country’s largest airport during the next holiday season.
