The new model will feature over-the-air software updates.

MG Motor U.K. has released the first official images of the all-new MG4, an electric hatchback slated to make its world premiere in September. Previously known as the CyberE, this is the automaker’s first global electric vehicle aimed at international markets.

The MG4 is the first MG model to ride on the Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) for EVs

Underpinning the upcoming model is the Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) that MG plans to use on a range of future vehicles, ideally with wheelbases measuring from 2,650 to 3,100mm. These include hatchbacks, SUVs, and sports cars.

“The MG4 EV is a key part of the next phase of growth for MG,” said MG Motor head of Product & Planning David Allison. “Our new MSP architecture will enable us to offer multiple options for the rapidly expanding U.K. electric car market, with all choices reinforcing our reputation for outstanding design, market-leading technology, and excellent value for money.”

It will be able to accommodate over-the-air updates

According to MG, the platform’s integrated battery structure has a vertical measurement of just 110mm, reducing the center of gravity while improving handling as well as interior space for both passengers and cargo. The MG4 will be initially offered in a range of battery capacities from 51 to 64 kilowatt-hours, which should be good for between 350 and 452 kilometers on a single charge.

Combined with a rear-wheel-drive layout, the MSP allows the MG4 to achieve a perfectly balanced 50:50 weight distribution. The architecture will also be compatible with upcoming technologies such as battery swap systems.

A Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) will allow MSP-based MG models to receive over-the-air (OTA) updates throughout the life of the vehicle. Moreover, the MSP will also reportedly accommodate Level 3 autonomous driving technology.

MG released patent images of the MG4 in February this year, part of four planned EVs originally planned to be marketed under the Cyber name. These include the MG Cyberster sports car as well as the MG CyberS and CyberX SUVs.
