The new Honda crossover is geared to compete at a high level.

Honda Cars Philippines (HCPI) is competing stronger in the fast-growing subcompact crossover segment with the all-new 2022 HR-V. It is geared to cater to the demand in the market with its new features such as the more modern SUV finish and the brand’s Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) named Honda Sensing.

With that being said, let’s compare the 2022 model to the outgoing model to highlight the changes around the Japanese subcompact crossover including what’s under the hood.

2022 Honda HR-V Old vs New: Exterior

Exterior-wise, the all-new Honda HR-V is slightly longer by 91mm and wider by 18mm at 4,385mm and 4,294mm, respectively. However, the outgoing model is taller with its 1,605mm rated height over the new version’s height of 1,590mm. Despite the size updates, the wheelbases of the two are the same at 2,610mm.

Honda said that the new crossover has a ‘contemporary design.’ The round roofline from the previous model now has a straighter orientation, while keeping the 2-door design concept intact. Wheel sizes stay at 17-inches, but the RS design is discontinued from the current range.

The black interior theme is carried over to the all-new version with few changes that provide a more contemporary finish. Two of which are the new 7-inch digital instrument gauge cluster (found on the top-spec V trim) and larger 8-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 6-speaker sound system.

ULT seats (Utility, Long, and Tall Mode) are still used in the 2022 model, allowing the HR-V to have a versatile cargo space. The top-spec HR-V V gets leather cabin materials, while the base S variant is equipped with fabric seats and a urethane shift knob.

The 2022 HR-V now joins the Civic, Accord, and Civic Type R as the active car models in the local lineup to be equipped with the Honda Sensing. It provides Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low Speed Follow (LSF), Lane Keep Assist System (LKAS), Road Departure Mitigation (RDM), among others.

Safer and more advanced

As for standard safety features, the subcompact crossover offers four airbags, ABS with EBD, Hill Descent Control (HDC), Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), Hill Start Assist (HSA), speed sensing door locks, multiview reverse camera, Emergency Stop Signal (ESS), ISOFIX, and immobilizer.

For 2022, the 1.8-liter SOHC i-VTEC engine is replaced with the 1.5-liter DOHC VTEC 4-cylinder gasoline engine. The Honda HR-V V boasts a single-scroll turbo, delivering 175 horsepower and 240 Nm of torque. On the other hand, the non-turbo HR-V S makes 119 horsepower and 145 Nm of torque.

A continuously variable transmission (CVT) still comes standard for both variants, sending power exclusively to the front wheels. And just like the outgoing second-gen HR-V, the new one uses ventilated brake discs at the front and brake discs at the rear.

Honda HR-V

The 2023 Honda HR-V is a subcompact crossover. In the Philippine market, it has two variants. The top-spec RS Turbo CVT is priced at Php 1,739,000. The mid-spec trim meanwhile, is the HR-V V Turbo CVT and it is priced at Php 1,649,000. The entry-level HR-V S CVT meanwhile is priced at Php 1,389,000.

For engines, the HR-V V Turbo and the RS Turbo uses a 1.5-liter engine capable of making 174 horsepower and 240 Nm of torque. The HR-V S also uses a 1.5-liter mill, but it is naturally aspirated. In turn, its output is rated at 119 horsepower and 145 Nm of torque. All three trims use a continuously variable transmission sending power to its front wheels. 

Size-wise, the HR-V V and RS are 4,385mm long, while the HR-V S is 4,330mm long. All three come with a width of 1,790mm, and a height of 1,590mm. Both also have a wheelbase length of 2,610mm. The top-spec V gets a ground clearance of 181mm, whereas the HR-V S has more at 196mm. 

Locally, the HR-V competes against the likes of the Mazda CX-3, Hyundai Kona, Subaru XV, Toyota Corolla Cross, Ford Territory, among others.
