The all-new Honda Civic Type R made its global debut last July 2022. While all of its design details have been revealed, the Japanese automaker seems to have forgotten to share the official power unit figures of the 2023 Civic Type R. Not until today.
2023 Honda Civic Type R
Honda has been saying since the model’s global debut that the next-generation Civic Type R is the most powerful iteration of the Civic’s performance-oriented variant yet. The Japanese automaker is indeed true to its word as the 2023 Honda Civic Type R comes with a more potent engine.
Under the hood, it is equipped with a 2.0-liter K20C1 turbocharged gasoline engine that puts out more horsepower and more torque as compared to the old model. The new Civic Type R’s 2.0-liter engine now delivers 315 hp and 420 Nm of torque. To put things in perspective, that’s an increase of 9 hp and 20 Nm of torque.
Honda said that it has managed to increase the Civic Type R’s power output through the following improvements: redesigned turbocharger, increased air intake flow rate, and a new more efficient exhaust system. The Civic Type R’s new exhaust features a straight-through design, and an active exhaust valve.
2023 Honda Civic Type R now comes with more power
Honda added that the turbocharger’s turbine wheels blades have also been optimized, allowing it to “generate pressure in a wider range and more efficiently.” All the tweaks that Honda has integrated made the all-new Civic Type R the most powerful Honda production vehicle sold in the United States.
The Civic Type R still comes with a six-speed manual transmission. Honda shared that it has also done some improvements to the vehicle’s gearbox such as equipping it with a lighter flywheel and a revised rev-match system. Through this, Honda claims that the 2023 Civic Type R delivers more stability on corner entry.
It also has more torque
Honda did not just focus on the mechanical bits to achieve a more potent power output. It has also worked on the Civic Type R’s exterior, with the effort to make it more aerodynamic. To do that, Honda took the design input given by the aerodynamic development members of the HRD Sakura Super GT team. As a result, Honda said that the Civic Type R is more “aerodynamically efficient, generating more downforce improving high-speed stability.”
Look at that cabin
Inside, Honda made the Civic Type R’s cabin to further enhance the driving experience. It comes with performance-focused details and features, including Type R's iconic red seats, carpet and trim, a redesigned aluminum shift knob, a serialized Type R plate on the dash, among many others.
The 2023 Honda Civic Type R’s pricing has yet to be announced. Previous reports state that it could come with a starting price of over $40,000 (around Php 2.25 million).
