The Mitsubishi Mirage G4 is a compact sedan that is offered by a reputable Japanese company that is known globally for creating the best hatchbacks such as Montero Sport and Pajero. Being a stablemate to the more popular and ubiquitous Mirage hatchback, we get to see the parallelism between the two cars as they both come in very inexpensive price points. But do they offer the same decent performance?

Looking at the exterior, we see the appeal that the sedan possesses. Sporting a more mature look, the sedan is all about practicality with its longer wheelbase and newly updated and extended rear bumper. It’s a sedan- there really is not much to talk about because people who prefer sedans prefer its basic feel and its simplicity- which is synonymous to Mirage G4.

The interiors are what set the model apart from its yesteryear counterparts; Mirage G4's ES trim level is newly-updated, boasting the 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth and a rearview camera, four-speaker sound system player and a USB port which are all nice additions for its price point. The rock-hard plastics composing the armrests can be a turn-off, but it’s all in a matter of preference.

5. Mitsubishi Mirage G4 Philippiné: Fuel & Performance

All that being said, looks can often times be deceiving. With the allure that this new model offers, it could not sustain when it comes to driving performance.

Transmission 5-speed manual INVECS-III CVT INVECS-III CVT

The sedan is over two thousand pounds, and has CVT as its transmission. Being powered a by 3-cylinder DOHC gasoline engine with Mitsubishi Innovative Valve-timing Electronic Control (MIVEC) system will not be really enough to provide the vehicle the substantial power it needs. So acceleration and driving in general takes extra time and caution. A 0-100KM takes you roughly 12 seconds, all while tolerating the unpleasant engine noise it produces while accelerating. Disappointing.

This is not the only problem that G4 may encounter: braking pedal is jumpy and is overall difficult to control, steering is very slow- and with little handling grip and thin tires, expect a laggy and bumpy ride in just about every slight road imperfections.

7. Mitsubishi Mirage G4 Philippines: Price list

As disappointing as the driver experience, nobody can contest that Mirage is ridiculously cheap! Brand new units start at P735,000. This pretty much explains why we still see G4 on the road.

We have to admit that when it comes to utility and overall appeal, the hatchback counterpart of Mirage G4 bests the sedan in so many ways. That being said, it is also worth mentioning that the sedan has an incredible price difference of P46, 000. Not everyone also likes to drive a hatchback anyway so the G4 provides an option for such a strange niche when it comes to picking a starting car. We recommend getting the ES trim level over the other variants, should you choose the Mirage as a starter car. The more you drive the sedan, the more you realize that it is really what it is- a starter car. And soon enough, you would feel the need to switch to another car, once you are capable of doing so.
