Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) revealed that it has sold a whopping 11,233,039 vehicles in 2023 for the global market. This figure includes its sub-brands like Lexus, small car specialist Daihatsu, and Hino trucks.
For Toyota, 2023 was a record-breaking year
Alone, that’s an incredible amount of cars sold in a year, but it also means that it has beaten its own global sales record of 10,742,122 cars which it set back in 2019. Furthermore, Toyota bested the previous sales record set by Volkswagen Group in 2019, which was 10,975,352 units sold. For those interested, the full 2023 TMC sales report can be downloaded from the company's official website.
TMC’s total global sales number likewise equates to a 7.2 percent year-on-year increase. According to the Japanese automaker, this was a result of 11 consecutive months of year-on-year increases within 2023.
In further breaking its 2023 global sales numbers down, the Japanese car giant saw 2,304,809 units rollout of its dealerships in its home country of Japan. This is equivalent to a whopping 20.9 percent year-on-year increase.
The brand’s 2023 sales for the rest of the world meanwhile, comes to 8,928,230 units. This is equivalent to a 4.1 percent year-on-year increase. Interestingly, the global sales of TMC have been seeing a continuous uptick in year-on-year sales for three years.
Of note, 30 percent of the total global sales figures achieved by TMC were from hybrid electric vehicles (HEV). This equates to 3,420,004 HEV units sold. For global battery electric vehicles (BEV) meanwhile, the Japanese car-making giant sold 104,018 units.
Toyota says its success, particularly in the Asian markets, may be attributed to strong demand.
The sales report from TMC has also shed light on how Toyota and Lexus cars performed in the Philippine market. In 2023, both sold a combined 200,031 units which is equivalent to a 14.9 percent year-on-year increase. In December 2023 alone, a total of 19,551 Toyota and Lexus-branded cars were sold in the Philippines.
Other Asian countries that saw an increase in year-on-year sales were Taiwan, Malaysia, India, and South Korea. According to TMC, this is mainly attributed to strong demand.
