San Miguel Corporation (SMC) announced that it has received its ‘strongest support yet’ for its New Manila International Airport (NMIA) project after the Dutch government approved an export credit insurance (ECI) for the project’s development.

The approved ECI is the largest grant in the 90-year history of Atradius, a trade credit insurance provider that represents the Dutch government. Dutch construction firm Boskalis will also be involved in the project, saying that the P740-billion airport project in Bulacan is the largest in its 100-year history.
Four parallel runways, a world-class terminal, and a modern and interlinked infrastructure network that includes expressways and railways are some of the planned features of the project. It is seen to create over a million jobs for Filipinos and strengthen sustainability in the country.
“This is a significant milestone not only for San Miguel and the NMIA project, but for the entire country. With this, we are closer to our dream of having a world-class, future-ready, and sustainably-built international gateway, proudly built by Filipinos for the Philippines,” said SMC President and Chief Executive Officer Ramon S. Ang.
“We will continue to work with Atradius, the banks, experts, national, and local government, and all stakeholders to ensure we will build this project in a sustainable manner and in compliance with the highest international environment and social standards,” added Ang.
The planned Airport City
To complement the NMIA project, SMC is planning to build an airport city in partnership with top architecture firm Palafox. The airport city will adopt green architectural and urbanism guidelines to create a more sustainable environment. It is also said to provide solutions to various socio-economic, environmental, and climate issues.
Aside from the said projects, the company is cleaning the Pasig and Tullahan Rivers, removing around 5,000 metric tons of waste per day. Not only will the rehabilitation program be good for the environment, but it will also pave the way for the construction of the hybrid Pasig River Expressway (PAREX).
