It aims to produce more competent drivers.

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has been rolling out various initiatives to make the lives of motorists more convenient. This month, the agency offers a free Theoretical Driving Course (TDC) for pre-registered student driver applicants.

LTO is offering free TDC this month

According to the government agency, the goal of the free TDC is to give an opportunity to Filipinos who cannot afford student permit and driving school fees. This initiative is said to breed more qualified drivers, which should make our roads safer.

“LTO recognizes that not all Filipinos have the financial means to cover TDC fees, which is why we have arranged for the provision of complimentary TDCs at our regional offices,” said LTO Chief Jayart Tugade.

The free TDC is available until May 12, 2023, at LTO’s regional offices nationwide, with the agency only accommodating a limited number of students. But the agency is looking to offer a free TDC regularly or monthly in partnership with its affiliated driving schools.

The LTO continues to find ways to make the lives of motorists more convenient

A TDC is a requirement for acquiring a driver’s license in the country. It is a 15-hour seminar where students will learn about the basics of driving and road safety.

Earlier this year, the LTO set standard rates on driving school fees to aid Filipinos who want to learn how to drive. The TDC is now capped at Php 1,000, which is a significant reduction from the previous rates of around Php 2,000.

“We wish to emphasize that the TDC is a prerequisite for all student permit applicants, and the agency is working diligently to make it accessible to those without the financial means to do so,” added Tugade.

The free TDC will help prevent motorists from acquiring fixers. Engaging with fixers is said to not only be a financial waste but it also results in incompetent drivers.

Another initiative to prevent fixers is the plan to shorten driver’s license tests. This would encourage applicants to take the test themselves and put away the need for a fixer.
