The Mitsubishi Mirage has passed successively through six generations
The Mitsubishi Mirage has passed successively through six generations and it is now nearly 40 years old. At launch, it was admitted that the compact hatchback received a handful of negative reviews. But year after year, the city car has managed to prove itself in hatchback segment.
Being given the myriad of upgrades and amendments, the Mitsubishi Mirage has now garnered much positive recognition. Even, it earned the 2012 – 2013 Car of the Year Award in the Philippines and as well as that, it was listed as one of 12 Greenest Cars of 2014 from Forbes.

1. Mitsubishi Mirage 2018 review: Exterior
The Mitsubishi Mirage 2018 exterior is a harmonious combination of the vitality and glamour.

At the front-end, the hatchback leaves us with a distinct impression of modern and sporty look. All traits are new: lower front bumper garnish, bloated bonnet and a diamond-shaped grille framed by aggressive automatic HID headlamps.

The side profile is almost unchanged but for a new set of bi-tone 15-inch alloys.

The rear, on the other hand, is still sweeping but the rear bumper crease obviously lower the hatch. LED taillights also make it more stylish.

2. Mitsubishi Mirage 2018 review: Interior
Being not as dynamic and appealing as the outside, the Mitsubishi Mirage 2018 interior, in contrast, is very solid, airy and comfortable. It is said that the moment you step in the Mirage’s cabin, the car will immediately attract you to its ergonomic design which caters for users’ joy and comfort. The Mirage also looks modern (except for the old-school passenger airbag cutout).
2.1. Seating capacity & cargo space
The 5-seater hot hatch brings both driver and passengers supportive fabric seats, a comfortable driving position and also, a good visibility. In particular, the driver’s seat is a 6-way adjustable seat – a special privilege in a hatchback.

In point of fact, the Mirage is able to indulge the most demanding customers with its ample cabin. In spite of small footprint, the rest of things are extremely good. The front is actually commodious in all respects, excluding the shoulders. In the meanwhile, the rear car is spacious too; however, the rear bench design partially molests the seating comfort. But don’t worry as the 3-point seat belts and individual headrests will make amends for that.
The luggage trunk is also equipped with lamp and tonneau cover
Speaking of cargo space, it’s good for daily rides as long as you fold the 60/40 split-folding rear seats and don’t excess its loading capacity. In fact, the 235-liter luggage trunk cannot fit a 26 or 28-inch wheeled luggage.
What’s more, the trunk is also equipped with lamp and tonneau cover.
2.2. Functional & modern cabin
The analog gauges are also re-profiled. Featuring LEDs backlit, they’re more legible thanks to an on-board LCD display. So, distance, average fuel mileage, distance, empty and maintenance service due are all clearly shown. On the left of the steering wheel is still a push-button engine start/stop with a convenient slot on the center console above the cup holders.

On the dashboard, highlight is a 6.5-inch touchscreen compatible with GPS navigation system. In addition to that, the cockpit is also set up with a multimedia player (DVD and MP3-iPod) and a 2 DIN single in-dash tuner along with Aux, Bluetooth connectivity, USB port, and SD card.
3. Mitsubishi Mirage 2018 review: Safety Features & Security
Never depreciate the safety of a hatchback
Don't judge a book by its cover. Yes, so never depreciate the safety of a hatchback. Many of you may not know that the Mirage used to win the ASEAN NCAP Grand Prix Award for Adult Occupancy Protection in the mini car segment. Let’s find out what brought it that grand title:
- Dual SRS airbags (driver’s and front passengers’ airbags)
- ABS with EBD
- Immobilizer
- Electronic Door Locks
- Brake Assist
4. Mitsubishi Mirage 2018 review: Engine & Performance
The Mitsubishi Mirage GLS CVT 2018 replies on an Euro 4 compliant 1.2L 3-cylinder DOHC gasoline engine with Mitsubishi Innovative Valve-timing Electronic Control (MIVEC) system. This engine is capable of cranking out 78 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 100 Nm of peak torque at 4,000 rpm. Converting all that power to large numbers on the speedometer is a INVECS – III Continuously Variable Transmission that works in tandem with a front-wheel drive system.

Regarding handling and driving experience, it goes without saying that the Mitsubishi Mirage 2018 Philippines can well afford to survive urban traffic in the country. For it, sprinting to 60 km/h is not a problem. Alongside the big help of the MIVEC engine, the suspension also devotes a great deal of effort to make the drive easier and more comfortable. Not only that, an aerodynamic design, a lightweight body, short wheelbase and thin tires likewise lend a helping hand on semi-rough roads. That said, we are not sure if it could be a good companion during your long trips.

With additional sound isolation, the NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) is significantly bettered.
As to fuel economy, it’s no wonder that the new Mirage is an eco-friendly machine with decent gas fuel consumption of 10.6 km/L at around 13 km/h in the city. Notably, it seems that have not yet grasped the appearance of an Eco Assist Lamp sign on the gauges. During favorable driving conditions, that sign will automatically light up to remind you of your fuel-efficiency. All things considered, the Mitsubishi Mirage deserves to be one of the best city car in the country.
