The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced the lifting of the mandatory use of face masks and the observation of physical distancing in public transportation. This is in consonance with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s Proclamation No. 297.

Public transportation has returned to normal

It was in March 2020 when the government first imposed a lockdown in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. Not only did the lockdown disrupt the car market but also public transportation. Quarantine guidelines such as enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) and general community quarantine (GCQ) were implemented to help curb COVID-19 cases.

Now that the COVID-19 safety protocols have been lifted, DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista is expecting the revival of the transportation industry. All passenger vehicles can continue to operate at full capacity, benefiting both transport operators and the Filipino commuting public.

Of note, the lifting of safety protocols covers all public transport across the country.

One of the changes brought by the lockdown is the more stringent implementation of RFID lanes at tollways in a bid to reduce physical contact. The latest development is DOTr’s appeal to fast-track the unified toll collection system for Autosweep and Easytrip RFID accounts.

The pandemic has also bolstered the use of cashless payment methods such as an Automated Fare Collection System (AFCS) in public transportation. The DOTr aims to implement cashless fare payments in various public transportation modes including buses, rail lines, and modernized jeepneys.

Despite the lifting of COVID-19 protocols, the agency secretary ensured that frequent sanitization in public transportation will continue to prevent any potential health risks.

“This new development is a significant step towards normalizing public transportation and supporting economic recovery,” said Secretary Bautista.

“While public safety remains a top priority, the removal of protocol aims to facilitate commuters’ convenience, contribute to the revival of the transportation industry, and help stimulate economy activity,” Bautista added.
