Coating on the chassis: Should or Should Not?

Updated Jun 07, 2018 | Same topic: Handy Maintenance Tips

Many people think that putting a coating layer onto car chassis helps prevent noise and rust. Is it true?

Car users often discuss noise-isolating measures for their vehicles such as applying door sound insulation and painting chassis. In fact, the noise-canceling effect of the coating does not improve the sound insulation, it only minimizes the buzz of the wind under the car. However, the coating will bring about other considerable benefits.

1. Advantages of a chassis coating

In some other countries around the world, the environment is clean and less dusty, chassis coating is unnecessary. In contrast, according to general tips on car care and maintenance, in the Philippines, a tropical country with more dirt and mud, covering the chassis with paint will bring significant benefits in terms of preventing rust.

Car coating will work best when the undercarriage is still new and not yet rusted under the effect of the environment. However, old cars should still be painted to avoid more rust and, at the same time, prevent pebbles on the road from damaging the chassis.

Coating the undercarriage should be done carefully. Avoid using low-quality solution or go through the wrong process which might eventually lead to peeling. Currently, there are many types of coatings available on the market, including the famous brand Liqui Moly or Wurth from Germany.

2. Chassis coating process

Step 1

In this first step, you should prepare the coating solution. Depending on the size of the vehicle, calculate the appropriate amount of fluid that you would need. Normally, it takes about 5 bottles of 150-ml solution for 5-seat and 7 bottles for 7-seat or larger cars.

Step 2

Thoroughly clean the chassis by washing and then reprocessing with specialized chemicals. Depending on the degree of stain or rust, the processing time will be long or short, but usually, it takes about 3-4 hours. Cleaning the chassis is important as it will affect the adhesion of the new coating. Apply tapes to uncoated areas.

Step 3

After drying the car, spray the coating solution onto the chassis. The spraying time is about one hour, then the waiting time is another 2 hours. Before and during the application, always shake the solution well for optimal coating adhesion.

The cost of coating the chassis depends on the amount of fluid used for the vehicle as well as on your specific auto center. Typically, 5-seat cars cost about P5,700 – P6,900. The 7-seat car is about P8,000.
