The D90 is Chinese automaker Maxus Philippines’ entry into the local seven-seater midsize SUV segment. By far, it is the largest SUV in Maxus’ lineup, and it is the only SUV with a body-on-frame chassis. It also features a considerable high ground clearance of 210mm.
To this end, the D90 in the local market directly competes against the likes of the Toyota Fortuner, Nissan Terra, Isuzu mu-X, and the Ford Everest, among others.
Moreover, the D90 comes with two diesel engine options. The more powerful of which is a 2.0-liter biturbo inline-4 mill for the 4x4 Premium AT variant. At most, this can make up to 214 horsepower and 480 Nm of torque. The other engine is a single turbo 2.0-liter mill for the 4x2 version, which can produce up to 159 horsepower and 375Nm of torque.
The Maxus D90 midsize, seven-seater SUV was introduced to the Philippine market on September 15, 2021. Before that though, it was initially launched as a concept vehicle back in the 2016 Beijing Auto Show. The production model then debuted at the 2016 Guangzhou International Motor Show.
On the outside, the Maxus D90, like its competitors, is a macho but premium-looking SUV. But as per its introduction, the D90 is also the largest midsize SUV in the Philippine market. This is because it measures 5,005mm long, 1,932mm wide, and 1,875mm tall. It also has a wheelbase length of 2,950mm.
The Philippine-spec D90 is kitted out with automatic LED headlamps, LED taillights, LED daytime running lamps, a sunroof, and a set of 19-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, the D90 features a premium interior with an abundance of soft touch surfaces. All of its seats are clad in leather, and space for elbows and legs are generous.
Keeping its occupants cool is a dual-zone automatic air-conditioning system with rear vents. The driver is also provided with a 12-way power adjustable driver’s seat, push-to-start button, cruise control, keyless entry, among others.
Technology and Safety features
On the dashboard of the D90 is a 12-inch touchscreen head unit. It has Apple CarPlay, and it is linked to an eight-piece speaker system.
Safety for this Maxus SUV is then handled by six airbags, stability control, traction control, hill-start and hill-descent control, rain-sensing wipers, etc.
Platform and chassis
The D90 midsize SUV uses the same ladder frame chassis that the Maxus T60 pickup truck uses. Suspension-wise, its rear uses a multi-link type and its front uses a double-wishbone type suspension. Braking is then handled by disc brakes for all four wheels.
Engine and drivetrain
There are two versions of the D90. The first one is the 4x4 Premium AT and it uses a 2.0-liter bi-turbo inline-4 diesel engine. At most, it can produce up to 214 horsepower and 480 Nm of torque.
The 4x2 Premium AT meanwhile, uses a single turbo 2.0-liter inline-4 diesel. It can make up to 159 horsepower and 375 Nm of torque.
Both of the said variants uses the same eight-speed automatic gearbox.
