The Mercedes-Benz GLA was first introduced at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show. It first arrived in the Philippines in 2017 and has since received upgrades until the latest generation was released in 2020.
On the exterior, the GLA dons a sporty look balanced with the signature Mercedes-Benz refinement of flowing lines and smooth curves. Up front is a bulging grille with horizontal blades flanked with LED headlamps and daytime running lamps. Underneath the grille is a chrome underguard that is also present at the rear together with the LED fog lamps and tail lamps. Such details make the GLA look fresher while keeping the sophisticated vibe. The base variant rides on 17-inch alloy wheels while the top range variant is furnished with 19-inch alloys.
As expected from Mercedes-Benz, the GLA boasts of its cabin decked in fine materials. Seats are upholstered in Artico authentically handmade leather paired with red stitching. Red accents are also present on the instrument cluster, giving a sportier feel to the cabin. In front is an organized and straightforward dashboard with the infotainment system in the center.
The crossover is furnished with an expansive trunk space that can load up to 431 liters of luggage. It can be further maximized by folding the rear seats to accommodate more cargo.
Technology & Safety Features
The Mercedes-Benz GLA is equipped with an 8-inch high definition multimedia display infotainment system that is capable of connectivity through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, complementing the needs of its target market. Audio comes out of a Harman Kardon Logic 7 surround sound system composed of six speakers. Infotainment systems of both variants are navigation-ready.
In terms of safety, the German manufacturer set up the GLA with an extensive list of features to ensure the utmost security. As standard, it comes with a slew of airbags, a push-start button to complement the keyless entry system, Anti-lock Braking System with Brake Assist, immobilizer, stability control, Lane Departure Warning System, and a Blind-Spot Detection System. To add comfort to driving, Mercedes-Benz equipped the GLA with cruise control.
Platform & Chassis
The GLA comes with MacPherson strut suspension in front and Multi-link rear suspension. Its four-wheel independent suspension enables the GLA to have better handling in city or off-road driving. Stopping power comes from ventilated discs all around.
Engine & Drivetrain
The base variant of the GLA is powered by a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine that can produce up to 122 hp and 200 Nm of torque. It is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission that sends power exclusively to the front wheels.
Meanwhile, under the hood of the AMG top-spec variant is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine that produces 381 hp and a powerful 475 Nm of torque. The engine is paired with an AMG Speedshift 7-speed sports dual-clutch transmission that serves power to all wheels. The AMG line comes with a dynamic select feature that allows the driver to switch among the three drive modes: eco, sport, and comfort.
