Starting out way back in 1974, the Jeep Cherokee is a well-known and well-storied model from the American automaker Jeep, currently under the FCA US LLC since 2015.

Now in its fifth generation, the Jeep Cherokee has left the weird, boxy styling of the fourth generation (KK) model to become a sleek and modern compact SUV.

2019 Jeep Cherokee Limited

2019 Jeep Cherokee is quite a departure from its predecessor, with sleeker lines and a more modern-looking design

As a Jeep, the Cherokee is quite a departure from the usual boxy and utilitarian looks that the brand has been known for; it actually has curves now and looks somewhat shark-like from the front with its slim and aggressive headlights.

All in all, a pretty good-looking modern SUV. There are, however, trademark design elements that Jeep retained, like the slatted vertical grille.

Viewed from the profile, the Jeep Cherokee 2019 displays a blend of elegance and ruggedness. Flared wheel arches, side claddings, and roof rails are very prominent to the eye. Meanwhile, the ground clearance on the Cherokee is quite generous.

With its 220mm ground clearance, the Cherokee trim can go where only a few other SUVs dare to tread

In contrast to the rest of the vehicle, the Cherokee’s rear features soft edges all around. Jeep enthusiasts might even mistake it for a typical Japanese SUV, a point which might be jarring for some.

Inside, All Cherokee trims look pretty good, boasting superb build quality. Soft-touch plastics provide a premium ambiance that’s easy to maintain. There’s the three-spoke multi-function steering wheel that complements the modern center console.

Also noteworthy are features like keyless entry, wireless charging, and the high-quality Alpine sound system, which can be controlled by the built-in touchscreen.

While the 2.4 liter Tigershark MultiAir 2 inline-4 engine provides pretty decent performance, the real showcase for the Cherokee Trailhawk is its Active Drive™ 4x4 System that employs a locking rear differential, handy for really steep inclines and tackling boulders.

The Trailhawk is also equipped with a skid plate and a pair of red tow hooks in the front bumper, highlighting its offroad capabilities.

By comparison, the Trailhawk gets red accents and stitching for the interior.

III. Why would you want to buy a 2019 Jeep Cherokee Philippines?

Despite being quite pricey, the 2019 Cherokee bests most other compact SUVs in its class in terms of on-road comfort and off-road capability, thanks in large part to the Jeep badge.

The Trailhawk, in particular, has an impressive approach and departure angles, complemented by its 224 mm ground clearance and a water fording depth of up to 508 mm.

The locking differentials and skid plates are among the features that have earned it the much-coveted Trail Rated badge for supreme drivability on the trails. If city driving is more of your thing, the Limited variant might be right up your alley.

Safety equipment on both variants are also top-notch, with a rigid energy-dissipating chassis, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Blind Spot Monitoring and 10 airbags.

Despite all these, however, there are a few caveats. The average fuel consumption leaves something to be desired at 8.33 km/l, as the engine’s 184 hp output tends to struggle with the vehicle’s weight, making it feel sluggish. There’s also a considerable amount of body roll, especially when tackling hairpin curves.

IV. About Jeep Philippines

Jeep is an established brand with practically a legendary reputation among off-road enthusiasts the world over. All Jeep models trace their existence to the eponymous Jeep vehicle that served as the primary workhorse of the US military during World War 2 (Jeep being a contraction of GP, or General Purpose vehicle). Since then, both the vehicle and the brand itself became synonymous with rugged reliability for decades.

Here in the Philippines, Jeeps were a godsend back in the days when there were little to no cement roads.

As such, the Jeep also became our primary means of transport, eventually becoming assimilated into our cultural identity by way of the colorful jeepney, a vehicle originally made from repurposed war-era Jeeps that were left behind after the liberation.

At present, Jeep models are marketed in the Philippines through the Auto Nation Group Inc. or ANG. Under ANG, Filipino off-road enthusiasts are given access to an impressive range of off-road vehicles such as the Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and Wrangler, as well as excellent after-market services as well.
