Technology is just half of the equation where driverless vehicles are concerned. The other half belongs to comfort, especially important when there’s nothing to do but enjoy the ride. Toyota aims to address both with its MX221 autonomous taxi concept set to be previewed at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Toyota brings its version of future mobility to the 2023 CES

Envisioned as a ride-hailing vehicle capable of Level 4 autonomous driving, the MX221 showcases a massive cabin occupied by four seats, each sporting an ergonomic design. However, this is only the tip of the iceberg, as the interior carries four configurations.

The default mode is called MX Pass, featuring the seats in a standard two-row arrangement. Switching to MX Plus has the rows facing each other, good for meetings on the go. MX Access accommodates a wheelchair inside, while MX Prime emphasizes luxury with two seats on board that offer functions such as power recline and a deployable tablet complete with digital keyboard.

More tech features developed by Toyota supplier Toyoda Gosei Co., Ltd. include lap airbags, a UV-C sanitizer, folding entertainment system, light-up door panels, and in-cabin monitoring that provides safety notifications and trip updates. The entire cabin is made of environmentally friendly materials engineered to minimize the loss of thermal energy.

Outside, the MX221 brings a smooth (if boxy) exterior with squared-off wheel covers at each corner. A lighted external signage in front greets passengers as the vehicle pulls up, while a rear signage spanning the tailgate glass projects a message that warns drivers when the vehicle is coming to a stop. Split doors at the sides slide outward for easy ingress and egress.

The MX221 is one of two futuristic concepts that Toyota is bringing to the 2023 CES, the other being the smaller MOOX that features interchangeable seats and interior items. It also has a wellness space that measures the amount of the occupant’s stress and fatigue levels, apart from being equipped with Level 5 autonomous driving.
