No more paper-printed driver’s license as LTO secures new plastic cards

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) announced that it has secured new plastic cards to be used in producing driver’s licenses, ending the issuance of a paper-printed license.

LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor Mendoza II shared that the agency secured around four million plastic cards, which is said to be enough to address the backlog on driver’s licenses. The latest supply of plastic cards is expected to be delivered next month.   

“The delivery of these four million plastic cards is enough to address both the backlog and the daily usage through application and renewal of driver’s license,” said Mendoza.

“So we would like to announce to our clients, to the Filipino people na wala ng lisensyang papel! Balik-plastic na lisensya na tayo!,” he added.

Mendoza said that the four million plastic cards were secured after the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) elevated to the Court of Appeals the injunction order issued by the Quezon City court in connection with the delivery of the remaining 3.3 million plastic cards that were procured early this year.  

Mendoza added that if the Court of Appeals would rule in favor of the OSG petition, it would mean an additional 3.3 million plastic cards on top of the four million plastic cards to be delivered to the LTO.

“This is really good news for all of us. And we in the LTO are very happy that everything is coming together na. We are back on the right track,” said Mendoza.

Last October 2023, the LTO appealed to the previous card supplier, Allcards, Inc., to withdraw the writ of preliminary injunction (WPI) it filed. This is to prevent the shortage in producing plastic driver’s licenses.
