Nothing is confirmed yet but context clues lead to possible candidates.

GAC Motor Philippines seems to be on track in expanding its model lineup, but the car brand is tight-lipped as to what future vehicle or vehicles it will be launching in the local market.

GAC Motor previewed key models for its bid to further increase its presence in the ASEAN market. The GAC models that were shown to us in Guangzhou, China include the following: the GS3 Emzoom, Emkoo, GS8, M8, and the Empow R. We were also able to test drive the said vehicles.

Looking at the list, three of the five GAC vehicles mentioned are already available in the Philippines, with the GS8 4WD being the latest model launched by the brand. This suggests that the M8 and the Empow R could be the two candidates for a possible vehicle launch for the Philippine market.

GAC M8

The M8 is a seven-seater MPV that could go up against the likes of the Toyota Alphard if it’s offered in the Philippines. It comes with an assertive exterior design that’s highlighted by a massive grille complemented by sweptback headlights that are integrated with striking daytime running lights. GAC Motor said that the M8’s fascia intends to create an illusion of a lion that’s ready to pounce.

The M8 that was shown to us in China comes with automatic sliding doors, which come with a seamless step board that pops out once the doors are opened. It also has sharp character lines, a trend seen on the latest GAC vehicles. A chrome accent on the side’s rear adds style points to the overall design.

The rear is equally striking as seen on the distinctive taillights that come with a tri-bar light pattern for the indicator or signal lights. And take note, the M8 that was previewed to us comes with a Hybrid badge, which makes it a more plausible candidate for joining GAC Motor PH’s model lineup. Of note, GAC Motor PH currently doesn’t have a hybrid vehicle in its model lineup.

The interior comes with a 2+2+3 seat configuration, which means that it has captain seats on the second row. The cabin also comes with plush materials, and the model previewed has a black-and-white theme.

In terms of what lies under the hood, the standard GAC M8 is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that delivers 250 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque; mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 2.0-liter hybrid powertrain, sourced from Toyota, is said to generate 181 hp and 270 Nm; connected to an e-CVT.

Empow R 2.0T

Another candidate for a local launch is the GAC Empow R 2.0T, which is the sportier version of the Empow that’s currently offered in the Philippines.

The GAC Empow R 2.0T comes with a more aggressive design as seen on its front bumper and side skirts. The rear is also fitted with a bigger bumper, diffuser, and quad exhaust. A wing or spoiler is also mounted on the trunk lid.

Inside, you might still find it somehow familiar with the non-R Empow as it still uses the same jet fighter cockpit layout, with the seats using microfiber suede. It also retained the black interior theme including the pillars and headliner. The R version also has paddle shifters, similar to the current top-spec Empow GE available locally.

Under the hood, the GAC Empow R uses a larger 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine as opposed to the 1.5-liter turbo engine in the standard model. It is capable of making 265 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission.

As stated earlier, nothing is confirmed as of this writing. But, GAC Motor PH sort of hinted that it could be announcing its plans by December or before year-end.
