Honda to introduce plug-in hybrid CR-V alongside this EV concept

Honda is going electric.

In spite of the emergence of electric vehicles (EV) in the global automotive scene, Honda seems to be not visibly worried about the transition. The only EV the Japanese carmaker has as of the moment is the Honda E and it is only sold in the European and Japanese markets.

However, that’s about to change with Honda’s latest EV concept to be displayed at the 2020 Beijing Motor Show Exhibit. But, the new Honda EV will only be available in Beijing, China. It seems that Honda is making its transition to EVs one step at a time.

Will this be a game-changer for the brand?

Honda said that the EV concept will show the direction of the mass production of its future EV brand in Beijing. With that said, can we say that Honda is saving the best for last?

Right off the bat, the new Honda EV concept looks nothing like the cutesy Honda E. The concept seems to be designed with Honda’s sporty design language that we see in its current lineup.

Up front, the Honda EV concept may have no grille just like every other EV. It could be running with full-width daytime running lights with the Honda logo that also has LED lighting. As such, the Honda EV concept could be the most advanced looking Honda once it’s launched.

In addition, Honda said that it will also exhibit the first plug-in equipped model CR-V PHEV alongside other electrified models and new mass-produced models. Acura and Honda Motorcycle will also be present in the said event.

Other Japanese car brands such as Toyota and Nissan seem to be adapting well with the electric car trend in the industry. Once the Honda EV concept is unveiled, it could be the stepping stone for Honda to a brighter EV future. The Beijing Motor Show will be starting on September 26, 2020.

Honda CR-V

The 2024 Honda CR-V is a midsize crossover SUV. For the Philippine market, it has three variants: the V Turbo CVT, VX Turbo CVT, and the RS e:HEV (hybrid) e-CVT.

The latest version of this Honda model has two different engine options. For the top-spec hybrid trim, it uses a 2.0-liter gasoline four-banger paired with a dual motor and lithium-ion battery. The combustion component alone produces up to 145 horsepower and 183 Nm of torque. The electric-powered component meanwhile, can churn out 181 horsepower and 335 Nm of torque.

Aboard the V and VX trims meanwhile is a 1.5-liter inline-4 engine that can churn out 187 horsepower and 240 Nm of torque.

Only the VX gets all-wheel-drive, while the rest are front-wheel-drive. All trims then use a continuously variable transmission (CVT), but the one on the hybrid trim is an electronic CVT (e-CVT).

In terms of dimensions, the all-new CR-V is 4,691mm long, 1,866mm wide, and 1,681mm (1,691mm for VX) in height. Both the hybrid and the V’s wheelbase then spans 2,701mm (2,700mm for VX).

Locally, the Honda CR-V competes against the likes of the Mazda CX-9, Cherry Tiggo 8 Pro, Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe, Peugeot 5008, etc.
