Ever wonder which Coolray is best for you? Then find out here.

Sold in China as the Geely Binyue, but known in the Philippines as the Geely Coolray, this subcompact crossover was released in the Philippines on September 25, 2019.

As of April 2020, Sojitz G Auto Philippines, the official distributor of Geely automobiles here in the country only has the Coolray available, with the bigger Geely Azkarra compact crossover underway. Despite that though, they’re making a killing when it comes to selling it.

As such, we can say that it has arrived in a time where Chinese car companies are on the rise in the country. This is especially true in the crossover market where the MG ZS, and the Geely Coolray itself, are rather affordable options for many Filipinos without compromising quality.

This makes them a legitimate threat to the Japanese, European, and American made crossovers that were available here in the country for the longest time.

Now, some of you are already aware of this and are considering buying a Geely Coolray in the near future. This, in turn, begs the question: which one of the four Coolray variants is the right one for you? Well, let’s find out, shall we?

Geely Coolray Variants: Exterior

When it comes to design, there aren’t many noticeable differences between the Coolray Comfort, Premium, and Sport variants. All have this very futuristic look to them that’s sure to catch the attention of people.

The 2022 Geely Coolray Sport Limited

The newer Coolray Sport Limited variant which was introduced later in October 2021 however, does stand out more thanks to having a different set of gloss black aluminum wheels, instead of the two-tone ones on the other trims.

All of the Coolray’s variants are then adorned with unique design choices like the “Expanding Cosmos” grille, the quad exhaust tips, faux carbon fiber accents, roof rails, as well as a very prominent rear spoiler. The Sport Limited trim takes this up a notch with a red color accent for the grille. Its rear spoiler is also much more prominent compared to the Comfort, Premium, and Sport trims.

Size-wise though, all Coolray trims have pretty much the same dimensions. They all come with a length of 4,330mm, a width of 1,795mm, a height of 1,609mm, and a wheelbase length of 2,600mm

For exterior equipment, the Coolray Sport and the Coolray Sport Limited stand out the most. This is because both come standard with LED headlights and fog lamps, which is simply better than the Coolray Premium and Coolray Comfort’s halogen set. The Coolray Premium, like the Sport and the Sport Limited, however, does come with a larger set of 255 55 R18 wheels compared to the Coolray Comfort’s 215 50 R17.

Both the Sport and the Sport Limited are also the only variants that come with auto-folding side mirrors. Unique to the Sport Limited trim is a power liftgate.

Apart from that, all four variants come with 196mm of ground clearance.

Geely Coolray Variants: Interior

When it comes to the Coolray variants’ cabins, the most obvious would be their seat covers. The Sport and the Sport Limited, of course, come with leather, the Premium with easy-to-clean but sturdy PVC, and the Comfort’s seats are covered in Fabric.

The design and the hyper-modern shapes found on the dashboard and the center console remain the same all across three variants. The 10-inch touchscreen is also standard and it comes with the same QD Link smartphone mirroring capabilities.

And lastly, all variants of the 2021 Geely Coolray come with a default trunk capacity of 330 liters, automatic climate control, cruise control, and all of them can comfortably fit five passengers.

The Coolray Comfort, however, doesn’t come with a smart keyless entry system, but a push to start button is available for the rest of the variants.

The Comfort also lacks the sunroof that is available on the Premium, Sport, and Sport Limited. Furthermore only the Sport and Sport limited offers a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat.

Geely Coolray Variants: Engine and Performance

All the Geely Coolray variants are powered by a surprisingly strong, 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-3 gasoline engine. The said engine can make 177 horsepower at 5,500rpm and 255 Nm of torque at 4,000rpm. Power is sent to the front wheels through a seven-speed wet type dual-clutch automatic.

Standard on all Coolray variants is a front MacPherson strut Independent Suspension for the front, a torsion beam type suspension for the rear, and disc brakes all around.

With this setup, all the variants of the Geely Coolray can do a 0-100 km/h time of 7.9 seconds, and it can return an average fuel consumption rate of 15.5 km/L. Do note that these figures are according to Geely and you might get different results depending on real-world conditions.

Geely Coolray Variants: Safety

In terms of passive safety equipment, all the Geely variants are equipped with dual front airbags. The entry-level Coolray Comfort however, lacks the front row side airbags available on the rest of the variants. In turn, only the Sport and the Sport Limited come with side curtain airbags.

Of note, the crown jewel of the Coolray’s safety equipment is its active parking assist and it’s basically a nifty gadget that enables the Coolray to park itself. This feature, though, is only available on the Coolray Sport and Sport Limited. The same goes for the blind-spot monitoring, which isn’t available on the Comfort and the Premium variants.

Aside from that, only the Premium, Sport, and Sport Limited comes with a tire pressure monitoring system and smart keyless entry.

All of the four Coolray variants come standard with an electronic parking brake, electronic stability control, anti-lock braking with electronic brake distribution, rear parking sensors, and hill start assist.

Geely Coolray variants: Conclusion

We’re going to say it outright: for the features that the Geely Coolray is offering, it’s a steal. This is regardless of whether it’s the base Comfort trim or the top-of-the-line Sport Limited.

The Sport and the Sport Limited though, are actually the cherries on top in the Geely Coolray cake with their active parking assist. But you know what, not many people will need that and instead will be more than happy with the model’s surprisingly beefy inline-3 engine.

Inside, the Coolray Sport Limited also gets a cooler-looking interior. Pun intended.

So in the end, let’s put it this way – if you want the brilliant conversation starter and/or if you actually have trouble with parking then get the Coolray Sport. If you want the latter whilst looking uber cool, then get the Sport Limited. If you really want to enjoy a vehicle with less electronic knick-knacks, then get the Coolray Comfort or Premium.
